Rick was at the Cove Steakhouse Wine Bar and Grill at Alchester Village in the outer Melbourne suburb of Boronia on Sunday, July 15 when he gave the diners the impromptu three song performance.

Rick Springfield performed Van Morrison’s ‘Gloria’, The Beatles ‘Twist and Shout’ and his own classic ‘Jessie’s Girl’.

According to the Knox Leader, Springfield was at the restaurant in January this year and promised the owner Jay Harrison that he would play next time he came back.

Rick was born in Sydney and after two years in London as a child his family moved to the Melbourne suburb of Ormond in 1962.

In 1969, he joined the band Zoot with Daryl Cotton (Vocals), Rick Brewer (drums) and Beeb Birtles (bass). They had a no. 4 hit in Australia with an acid-rock version of The Beatles ‘Eleanor Rigby’.

Springfield had his first solo hit in 1972 with ‘Speak To The Sun’. It grabbed the attention of the American audience and soon he had a string of US hits including ‘Jessie’s Girl’ (no. 1 US).

Rick got into acting and appeared in Battlestar Galactica and The Rockford Files before landing the role of Dr. Noah Drake in General Hospital. More recently, we saw Rick playing a degenerate version of himself in ‘Californication’.

Rick is in Australia visiting his friend Darryl Cotton who is being treated for liver cancer.

UPDATE: Darryl Cotton has passed away at age 62
