Songwriter Sues Diane Warren Over Chicago Hit 31 Years Later

It took him 31 years to finally make the filing but Brendan Greaves, 45, has sued Diane Warren over the Chicago hit “Look Away”.

“Look Away” was released in 1988, hitting number 1 on the Hot 100 and the Adult Contemporary chart. Warren is the only songwriter on the tune.

According to TMZ, Greaves claims that, at the age of 14, he submitted a song called “Look Away”, with very similar lyrics, to the National Schools Make Music competition in England. The contest was sponsored by EMI who Greaves believes gave the song to Warren.

Greaves claims that he lives a quiet life in rural England and only recently became aware of the Chicago hit. The record only peaked at 77 in Britain upon its original release. Greaves is seeking $20 million in the suit.

Warren has written numerous hits over the years including “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, “Time, Love and Tenderness”, “Un-Break My Heart”, “I Get Weak”, “If I Could Turn Back Time”, “Love Will Lead You Back”, “Rhythm of the Night”, “Because You Loved Me”, “Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now” and “How Do I Live”. She’s been nominated nine times for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
