Sting will be among the very special guests joining Bryn Terfel on stage for a one-off concert at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the opera star’s 50th birthday.

The acclaimed solo artist and former Police frontman is one of several performers from the worlds of opera, classical, musical theatre, traditional music and rock who will share the stage with Bryn as he marks his milestone with a programme from Wagner arias to Welsh hymns and show tunes.

Also joining him are sopranos Danielle de Niese and Rebecca Evans, harpists Catrin Finch and Hannah Stone, musical theatre star Daniel Evans, and trumpet soloist Alison Balsom, who headlined the Hall with a solo recital last October.

Bryn said: ‘I’m so pleased to be able to announce such an exciting line-up for my birthday concert in October. This show is all about the music that means the most to me, and the chance to perform it alongside so many talented friends is a wonderful opportunity.

‘Sting is one of the outstanding songwriters and musicians of his generation, and we have something extra-special planned for this unique, once-in-a-lifetime show.

‘I’ve been lucky enough to work across opera, classical, musical theatre and even pop, and this event is about sharing the very best of those worlds to create an unforgettable evening..’

Bryn guested at Sting’s 60th birthday concert in New York in 2011, where he performed an unforgettable version of The Police’s Roxanne, and the rock star will now come to London to return the favour. Welsh orchestra Sinfonia Cymru, conducted by Gareth Jones, will accompany them. .

Daniel Evans, celebrated for his starring roles in Stephen Sondheim shows, has also appeared with Bryn before, at his Faenol Fesival in North Wales as well as joining him on stage at the BBC Proms in 2010 for the memorable Sondheim at 80 celebration. Vocal ensemble Only Men Aloud and Welsh folk instrumentalists Calan will also perform.

One of the most popular voices of his generation, Bryn received early attention for his superb portrayals of Mozart’s Figaro and Verdi’s Falstaff. In recent years he has been acclaimed for his performances of Mephistopheles (Faust), Scarpia (Tosca), Sweeney Todd and the Wagner roles of Wotan and Hans Sachs.

His recordings have earned him four Grammy Awards and four Classical Brit Awards, and he is also the recipient of The Queen’s Medal for Music.

Bryn has performed at the Royal Albert Hall no fewer than 33 times, and received the award for Male Artist of the Year at the Classical Brit awards on the stage in 2000, 2004 and 2005.
