The Beasts ‘Still Here’ Was Designed As A Final Statement for Spencer P. Jones

Tex Perkins says The Beasts 2019 release ‘Still Here’ was made as a final statement for his Beasts of Bourbon co-founder Spencer P. Jones.

“I didn’t have a vision of recording an album,” Tex Perkins tells Noise11.com. “It was about putting Spencer into the studio for one last time. It was for old time’s sake really to be in that creative studio environment. I am big on final statements. When you know you are on the way out you should have the chance to make one last statement. That was what we were trying to allow Spencer to do and we got ‘At The Hospital’ out of him. That set the tone for the rest of the record”.

Spencer had written ‘At The Hospital’ years before he was diagnosed with cancer. “Even though it was written years earlier before any of us were frequenting hospitals, he offered that up,” Tex said. Everything else was about what was happening. It was a reflection on ourselves”.

Another ‘Still Here’ moment is the cover of Warren Zevon’s ‘My Shit’s Fucked Up’. Cancer took Zevon in 2003. “It seemed appropriate,” says Tex. “I have always been impressed by that song. I thought it was written when he discovered he was diagnosed with cancer but it was written before then. It was him anticipating a visit to the doctor. His second last album was ‘Life’ll Kill Ya’ then he made another statement with ‘My Ride Is Here’. “My Shit’s Fucked Up’ seemed like it was waiting for us. It seemed a very appropriate song to cover in that context.

The Beasts will head out for more shows across November and December.
