Aidan Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth’s rendition of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells ‘For Two)’ is one of the most stunning musical performances I have witnessed in years.

Roberts and Holdsworth performed the classic Oldfield musical masterpiece at the Melbourne Recital Centre last night (February 15) and turned it into a masterpiece of their own.

Roberts and Holdsworth played the 48-minute piece from start to finish and every note of every instrument. That meant a musical juggling of piano, organ, drums, percussion, bass, mandolin, two slightly distorted guitars and the centerpiece instrument, the tubular bells which at times made you wonder how they would do it.

They did it by darting across the stage, crisscrossing each other to get to the next instrument on time.

Daniel and Aidan have taken Tubular Bells For Two to the other side of the world for the Edinburgh Festival and they will do it next at WOMAdelaide on March 9.

English musician Mike Oldfield composed and recorded Tubular Bells when he was 19-years old. The year was 1973. It was the very first album for a new record label called Virgin Records that had recently started by a 24-year old Richard Branson.

Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts Tubular Bells For Two is now also available for a limited release on DVD.
