Eric Hutchinson is returning to Australia after more than 15 years, and in this Noise11 interview with Paul Cashmere he looks back across a remarkable songwriting career while revealing what comes next.
Eric talks about his forthcoming album Repeating Myself, a project inspired directly by his first album Sounds Like This. Rather than chasing a completely different sound, Eric explains why he went back to the songwriting instincts of his younger self, embracing soulful, piano-driven pop and a more immediate approach to writing.
He also reflects on Rock And Roll, the song that has remained central to his career for 25 years, and It’s All Right With Me, a song that continues to connect with younger musicians.
Eric tells the story behind Watching You Watch Him, revealing how his wife’s intense fascination with tennis legend Roger Federer became the inspiration for the song. He also discusses performing at Rod Laver Arena during his previous Australian visit.
The conversation covers Tell The World, its connection with Growing Up Fisher and a Microsoft Windows 10 campaign, as well as Easy Street, Dear Me, Modern Happiness, his deliberately long song titles and his philosophy around making music that is unique and difficult to imitate.
Eric also discusses his versions of Three Little Birds by Bob Marley And The Wailers and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic by The Police.
Finally, Eric looks ahead to his Australian return in November 2026, with shows planned for Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
