Tex Perkins Dissects Silent Night

Tex Perkins has broken down the lyrics to ‘Silent Night’ line by line for Libby Gorr on ABC 774 and its quite disturbing.

Tex says the song features “poor songwriting” with “terrible phrasing” and he went about proving his point.

“‘Silent Night’, pretty self-explanatory. ‘Holy Night, all is clam, all in bright’ … now traditionally I like my nights to be dark but, you know, a bright night is probably the last thing I want out of a night,” Tex said on ABC 774.

He continued. “Now, I always thought this next lyric was ‘round young virgin’. It’s actually ‘round yon virgin’ as in around yonder virgin. The brightness is around the virgin. Poor songwriting. It is broken up with this terrible phrasing and you’ve given the wrong idea all the way through”.

The next line is totally bizarre. “‘Holy infant, so tender and mild’. I’ve had five kids and I’ve never referred to any of them as tender,” he explained. “Steak is the only thing I call tender. And ‘mild’. The only thing I say is mild is a curry”.

And the finale, “‘Sleep in heavenly peace’ repeat ‘sleep in heavenly peace’. That’s my favourite line but it sounds like death to me. ‘sleep in heavenly peace?’ Suddenly we are dead”.

Tex Perkins, father of five, will host his own family Christmas lunch in Melbourne on Christmas Day with a wife and ex-wife along for the fun … and no doubt, a family sing-along.

Listen to Tex Perkins talk about ‘Silent Night’ and perform the Christmas classic for Libby Gorr on ABC 774.
