Australia’s radio industry has once again showed its lack of support for Australian music in 2012 with figures released today showing that just one Australian song made the Top 10 airplay figures this year.

Matt Corby ‘Brother’ was the 5th most played song on Australian radio this year and the only Aussie song in the Top 10. It fact, it was the only Australia song in the Top 20.
The Black Keys ‘Lonely Boy’ was the most played song of 2012 on radio in Australia and Pink was the most played artist.
The figures once again demonstrate Australia’s commercial radio network’s lack of commitment to Australian artists.
The most played Australian artist was Guy Sebastian with 29950 plays across the depth of his entire catalogue compared to Pink songs played 43,429 times.
That only made Guy Sebastian the 11th most played artist in Australia behind Pink, Maroon 5, David Guetta, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Flo Rida, Rihanna, Calvin Harris and Bruno Mars.
The most common most played Aussie artists were mainly classic rock acts. The top 10 most played Australian artists of 2012 included INXS (3), Cold Chisel (4), Powderfinger (5), Crowded House (6) and Bee Gees (7) .
Keith Williams, Managing Director of Aircheck, the company monitoring the airplay, sees the figures as positive for the Australian music industry. “The Most Played Australian Song was ‘Brother’ from Matt Corby at number 5 whereas last year there were no Australians in the Top 10. 2012 was a better year all round for Australian artists with 13 songs in the Top 100 and clearly this success was song driven,” he commented.
