The Grammy Awards will double as a wedding venue today. 34 couples will wed as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis perform their hit song ‘Same Love’ with Madonna and Queen Latifah.

The 34 chosen couples will come from various backgrounds. They will be gay, or straight, young or old, black or white.

Queen Latifah will be the marriage celebrant.

The televised marriages is expected to cause a controversy and that is what the Grammy Awards wants. “I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them, and that’s healthy,” Neil Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, told Accesshollywood.com.

Portnow said the segment is not a stunt. “We don’t need to stoop to the level of trying to find gimmicks and sensationalistic approaches to what we do,” he said.

Couples have asked Macklemore & Lewis often if they could marry during their show. Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich is just including what is very much part of the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis real life performance into the show.

The 56th Grammy Awards will screen live at 8/7c on CBS in the USA and from midday today on Fox8 in Australia.
