Mike & Molly star Melissa McCarthy will star in the big budget revitalisation of Ghostbusters.

The all-female star cast will also feature Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

Shooting for Ghostbusters is expected to get underway midyear in New York City.

The original Ghostbusters spawned two movies in the 80s ‘Ghostbusters’ in 1984 and the sequel ‘Ghostbusters II’ in 1989.

The script for the new movie started development in 2009 but was stalled with the death of original writer Harold Ramis in 2014. Ramis also played the part of Dr Egon Spengler in the first two movies.

The original cast included Ramis’ co-writer Dan Ackroyd as Dr Ray Stantz, Bill Murray as Dr Peter Venkman and Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore.

Ramis developed part of the script before his death and will be credited as a co-writer along with Ackroyd, Katie Dippold and director Paul Feig.
