Grammy nominee, multi-instrumentalist and producer Steven Wilson has recorded a concept album about Joyce Vincent, a 38-year old woman who no-one noticed had died for two years.

Vincent died alone in her bedsit in Wood Green in 2003. Her body was not discovered for two years.

Joyce had left her job in 2001 and over the next two years spent time at a domestic abuse shelter after being abused in a relationship. Around 2003 she also detached herself from her family and friends and moved into the bedsit above the Wood Green shopping centre.

In November 2003 Vincent spent two days in hospital after vomiting blood. She died in the bedsit from unknown causes in December 2003. It wasn’t until January 25 2006 when the owner of the property, Metropolitan Housing Trust, decided to repossess the space because of unpaid rent. Electricity was going at the address due to direct debit.

Police ruled death by natural causes as the body was too badly recomposed for a proper autopsy.

Steven Wilson started work on the album in November 2014. The result is the album ‘Hand, Cannot, Erase’. Wilson was drawn to create the musical piece after seeing a documentary on Joyce titled ‘Dreams of a Life’.
