Will Adele Break Dire Straits’ ARIA Chart Record?

Adele’s 21 has spent 26 weeks at the top of the ARIA Album Chart. We examine whether she’ll break the record.

Adele’s 21 was a fixture atop the ARIA Albums Chart throughout 2011 and it looks likely to continue into 2012, having already held number one for the first three weeks of the year.

This week’s effort makes it 26 weeks in total, pipping John Farnham’s 25-week Whispering Jack run, and approaching Delta Goodrem’s Innocent Eyes at 29 weeks.

She’ll need to be on top for another 9 weeks to equal the longest number one run in ARIA Chart history: Dire Straits Brothers In Arms at 35 weeks. So, is it likely?

Well, none of the albums beneath her on the chart are likely to hop up. We can assume LMFAO, Foster The People, One Direction, Coldplay, et al have already had their peak.

We’ll probably need a blockbuster album to unseat her. The likeliest artists who are releasing albums in February are Nicki Minaj, will.i.am, and Tim McGraw. Doubtful.

In March, indie heroes The Shins might give her a run for her money. But the most likely to hit number one is the new album from Hilltop Hoods, Drinking From The Sun, which will be released on March 9.

Therefore, if no one can beat her until then, she’ll have racked up 33 weeks leading to the chart of March 19 when the Hoods will be eligible.

The Adelaide trio will most-likely will take the top spot, since their last two albums debuted at number one, sold multiple-platinum, and Drinking From The Sun‘s first single ‘I Love It’ has just gone platinum.

There are other heavy-hitters releasing new albums later on in the year – Muse, Madonna, Linkin Park, John Mayer, Paramore, Cody Simpson, The Temper Trap, Guy Sebastian – but the question is, can they get in early enough to deny Adele that final three weeks and ARIA immortality?

Barring a late burst from Foster The People in the coming weeks, or a long reign for Drinking From The Sun, it seems inevitable.

See you in April…
