Frontman Greg Arnold talks to Paul Cashmere about making new music, the deeply personal inspiration behind the record, and the band’s return to their acoustic roots.
Arnold explains how relocating to Geneva for eight years led to a creative resurgence, producing more songs than originally planned and eventually turning his son’s old bedroom into a home studio. This intimate setting shaped the “bedroom folk” sound of Rae Street, reflecting a stripped-back approach inspired by earlier acoustic tours.
The album title, Rae Street, is a nod to Melbourne’s musical history, with many notable artists having lived there. Arnold also opens up about the emotional weight of the album, particularly You’ve Gone Before You Went, a song about losing his mother to Alzheimer’s. He discusses the challenge of performing such intimate songs live and the balance of sorrow and joy throughout the album, from reflective tracks to celebratory songs like Why Don’t You Come Around.
Rae Street captures Things of Stone and Wood’s honest songwriting, blending reflection, loss, joy, and the lived experiences of the band members. Arnold describes the project as a continuation of a decades-long conversation with their audience and a reaffirmation of the band’s identity.
In this conversation, Arnold also recounts the band’s origins, the first gigs, and humorous moments from their early career, illustrating a journey that spans over 30 years.
With new music and a tour planned for 2026, Things of Stone and Wood are back, connecting with long-time fans and a new generation through heartfelt songs and shared experiences.
