The Grateful Dead Play Their Last Ever Show

It’s all over for the Grateful Dead, at least according to the band.

The Dead played the final show of their Fare Thee Well run of shows in Chicago on Sunday night and, for the first time in their five show run, repeated a number of songs from their catalog

Although we might just be overthinking things, the final five songs seemed like a well planned song cycle to tell the story of an aging band winding things up on their own terms. Included were the final songs written together by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia, Days Between, and the Dead’s one foray into top forty stardom, Touch of Grey (1987 / #9).

Finally, after much speculation on the band’s final live performance, the honor went to Attics of My Life from their 1970 album American Beauty, a song that they would only play 52 times between 1970 and last night, a fraction of their most performed tunes.

The set list:

Set 1
China Cat Sunflower (from Aoxomoxoa, 1969)
I Know You Rider (from Europe ’72, 1972)
