Black Keys have topped Australia’s ARIA chart with their ‘Turn Blue’ album.
The eighth studio album for US band The Black Keys “Turn Blue” becomes the bands first No.1 album in Australia, as it debuts at the top of the ARIA Albums chart this week.
“Turn Blue” becomes the 702nd No.1 album in Australia (1965 to 2014) and the 553rd for ARIA (1983 to 2014), and by debuting at the top it becomes the 351st album to enter at No.1. It’s the first time that the Nonesuch record label (through Warner) has achieved a berth at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart, and it’s the seventh time that the word ‘Blue’ has appeared at No.1, but the first time that ‘Turn’ has been at the top of the charts.
This new No.1 also becomes the 256th chart-topping album for an American act (Pharrell was the last back in mid-March) and The Black Keys become the 141st American act to reach the top. Plus they’re also the 330th Group to reach the top of the ARIA Albums chart and the 63rd American Group to do so, with the last US group to make it to the summit being in June 2013 when Queens of the Stone Age did so for a week with “…Like Clockwork”.
“Turn Blue” also becomes the seventh charted (of eight studio) album for The Black Keys and now the third Top 10 placed, as their previous album “El Camino” (TW-85) made it to No.3 in mid-February of 2012 and their first Top 10 was “Brothers” (HP-8, May 2010), the bands sixth studio set. And thanks to his national tour, Michael Buble holds at No.2 with “To Be Loved”, the album was spending its fifth and final week at No.1 this week last year.
Michael Jackson debuts at No.3 with “Xscape”, an album of previously un-released material, which includes the current Top 30 single “Love Never Felt so Good” (TW-28) featuring Justin Timberlake, and with the album being released on Tuesday, this position is after only two to three days of sales, but with the new Coldplay album out as of Friday (16th May), Michael might not get to the top next week. This new entry becomes Michael’s 13th studio album, and second posthumous release after “Michael” debuted and peaked at No.10 in December 2010, and “Xscape” also becomes his fourteenth Top 10 album in Australia.
After two weeks at No.1, the ‘Frozen’ soundtrack drops back down to No.4, and climbing back up four places to No.5 are INXS with their “The Very Best of” compilation. Harrison Craig climbs back up a place to No.6 with his “L.O.V.E.” album whilst also up a place, and scoring a new peak of No.7, is Cliff Richard with “The Fabulous Rock ‘N’ Roll Songbook”. The Arctic Monkeys tour helps their current album “AM” back into the Top 10, up five to No.8 and making it a fifth week within the Top 10, the last time it was in the ten was back in mid-February for a single week at #10. After leaping into the ten at No.6 last week, Sol3 Mio and their self-titled album drop back down to No.9 and holding at No.10 for another week is the former No.1 album for Chet Faker “Built on Glass”.
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: The Eurovision Song Contest for 2014 was held in Copenhagen, Denmark last weekend, and the album for the show scores the series’ its highest chart placing, as the 2014 edition leaps back up eighty-four spots to a new peak of No.13, the 2013 edition made it to No.16 and the 2012 album made it to No.15. And with Jessica Mauboy appearing on the second semi-final singing the song “Sea of Flags” (TW-40), her album “Beautiful” is back up ten places to No.15 this week. “The NightDay” EP for ZHU is up a couple of places to a new peak of No.18 and Avicii is up ten spots to No.24 with “True”. Sarah McLachlan’s latest album “Shine On” debuted at No.87 last week on digital sales, with the physical release helping it this week to jump up sixty-one places to a new peak of No.26 becoming her third Top 30 placing here. Ahead of his shows here soon, Keith Urban is back up thirteen places to No.35 with “Fuse” and also returning to the Top 50 this week are James Blunt with “Moon Landing” (54 to 41), “Native” for OneRepublic (57 to 48) and Rufus with “Atlas” (60 to 50).
DOWN DOWN: The three albums that fall out of the Top 10 this week are all last weeks debuts from within the ten, Lily Allen with “Sheezus” (4 to 12), the highest entry of “So We Can Remember” for Thundamentals (3 to 20) and In Hearts Wake with “Earthwalker” (5 to 29). Iggy Azalea suffered a similar drop last week, and this week “The New Classic” falls seven places to No.21, with Russell Morris down six to No.25 with “Van Diemen’s Land”. The Angels’ two compilation entries from last week both drop down, Volume 1 (Studio Hits) falls thirteen places to No.34 and Volume 2 (Live Hits) suffers a worse drop (38 to 94). Tina Arena’s “Reset” is back down nine to No.45 and the “Love Child” TV Soundtrack falls back seventeen to No.49, whilst also falling out the Top 50 are Asgeir (42 to 53), Paolo Nutini (29 to 57), David Hobson & Rachael Beck (39 to 59), Ben Harper (40 to 73), Disclosure (50 to 74), DZ Deathrays (23 to 75), MKTO (44 to 82), Hugh Laurie’s “Didn’t it Rain” (31 to 93) and leaving from last weeks Top 50 and out of the hundred this week is Ray LaMontagne with “Supernova” (#49).
The fourth album for local long-facial-haired act The Beards debuts at No.30 entitled “The Beard Album”, becoming the bands second ARIA Albums chart entry, as their third set “Having a Beard is the New Not Having a Beard” made it No.63 in March 2012. New at No.36 is the debut album for English singer Foxes entitled “Glorious”, whilst the No.38 entry of “I Never Learn” for Lykke Li is the second album to chart here for the Swedish singer-songwriter, as her second studio album “Wounded Rhymes” made it to No.30 in March 2011.
Another Swedish act in the form of the group Little Dragon debut at No.44 with their fourth studio album “Nabuma Rubberband”, becoming their second charting album in Australia, as their previous release “Ritual Union” made it to No.91 in August of 2011. The final Top 50 entry of the week is the self-titled album for Killer Be Killed, new at No.47. The band is made up of members from The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sepultura, Mastodon and The Mars Volta.
Lower 50: Illy lands his highest charting single this week with “Tightrope” (TW-33) and this helps his current album “Cinematic” to jump back up twelve places to No.52 this week. And with the new Michael Jackson album debuting high, his compilation “The Essential” is back up twenty-six places to No.56. “Harlequin Dream” for Boy & Bear is back up thirteen places to No.64 and returning albums this week come from Bastille (#69), the soundtrack for ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ (#71) as the DVD/BR was released here this past week, a third Top 100 placing for The Arctic Monkeys as “Suck it and See” (HP-4) is back in at No.84, ‘The Voice’ 2014 judge Will.i.am is back in at No.88 with his “#Willpower” (HP-9) album, “The 20/20 Experience – The Complete Experience” for Justin Timberlake (#90), “Hybrid Theory” for Linkin Park (#95), “The Number Ones” for The Bee Gees (#97) and finally Paloma Faith with “A Perfect Contradiction” (#98).
Melbourne band Closure in Moscow this week see their second studio album “Pink Lemonade” become their first Albums Chart entry, as it debuts at No.58 this week. The fourteenth studio album for Tori Amos entitled “Unrepentant Geraldines” enters at No.61 becoming her 14th albums chart entry (13 studio and 1 GH set, album #11 didn’t chart here), and it enters one place lower than her previous entry, “Gold Dust” (HP-60, October 2012).
US band Down enter at No.79 with their EP “Down IV – Part II”, whilst the first part made it to No.58 in September 2012, and this becomes the bands fifth albums chart entry overall on the ARIA Charts. The final new entry is at No.87, the sixth studio and first self-titled album for Natalie Merchant, which becomes her fourth ARIA Albums chart entry and her first since 2002’s “Motherland” (HP-83, February 2002).
