The Family, the band Prince formed and signed to his Paisley Park record label, have re-recorded their classic Prince-penned song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.

‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ was originally recorded for ‘The Family’ debut album from 1985. Sinead O’Connor covered the song five years later and still today some people think of it as Sinead’s song.

Prince did not approve of the Sinead cover. In a 2011 interview with George Lopez he said, “I don’t mind fans singing the songs. My problem is when the industry covers the music. By covering music it means your music doesn’t exist anymore. Sometimes people think I am doing a Sinead O’Connor song or a Chaka Khan song when in fact I wrote those songs”

In ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ the lyrics says, “Its been 7 hours and 13 days since you took you love away”. Susannah Melvoin said “it’s with a musical heavy heart that tonight we honor our dear friend and musical collaborator Prince and what’s to be 7 hours and 13 days after his passing.

On Sunday, members of fDeluxe entered Creation Audio in Minneapolis and recorded a brand new version of the song they first cut for Prince’s Paisley Park Records: ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.

The new version features the 14 piece STRINGenius, fDeluxe performed the song with Clare Fischer’s classic string arrangement for the very first time since 1985.

Co-lead singer Susannah Melvoin was not able to be part of the session or video, but added her vocal performance at a subsequent session in her hometown of LA only 18 hours ago.
