Heather Nova releases In The Path Of Hurricanes ahead of her 14th album, The Orchard, reconnecting her present-day songwriting with the island imagery and emotional intensity that have defined more than three decades of her career.

Heather Nova has released In The Path Of Hurricanes, the latest single from her forthcoming album The Orchard, due October 30, 2026 through V2 Records. The song draws on Nova’s Bermudian surroundings to explore the uncertainty of romantic attraction, using the physical force of hurricanes as a metaphor for the emotional pull of wanting someone while questioning whether the feeling is mutual or imagined.
The release places Nova in a career that now stretches more than three decades from Walk This World, the 1994 single that established her internationally. That song, taken from her breakthrough album Oyster, introduced a songwriter whose work could move between intimate confession, atmospheric rock and imagery rooted in the natural world. In The Path Of Hurricanes continues that relationship between landscape and emotion, but from the perspective of an artist writing from the island environment that has remained central to her identity.
The new single has a driving sound that the accompanying release material compares with the atmospheric momentum of The War On Drugs. Its central metaphor comes directly from Bermuda, where the beauty of a subtropical island exists alongside the recurring threat of severe storms. Nova turns that tension into a song about desire, uncertainty and surrender to feelings that may or may not be reciprocated.
The lyric, “I live in the path of hurricanes / Following the light / Barefoot dancing / Drinking the rain”, places the natural environment inside the emotional narrative rather than using it simply as scenery.
The Orchard is scheduled for October and is identified as Nova’s 14th album. She describes the record as an exploration of raw emotion that also deliberately seeks hope and possibility.
While making the album, Nova became interested in the psychological effect of repetition in songwriting and performance.
“In the middle of writing this album I realized something, that songs are in fact a form of manifestation,” Nova says. “An artist sings their songs over and over while recording, and then every night on tour. Whatever we do on repeat we start to embody, to become.”
That idea provides a framework for The Orchard, where Nova says she wanted to continue confronting difficult emotions while also allowing space for optimism.
Nova’s connection to nature predates her recording career. Born in Bermuda, she spent much of her childhood aboard her family’s 42-foot sailing boat, travelling through the Atlantic and Caribbean. She later moved to the United States, studied film at the Rhode Island School of Design and relocated to London after graduating, where she began performing and recording music.
In 1990 she released her first recording, These Walls, under the name Heather Frith. The name Heather Nova appeared in 1993 with the Spirit In You EP and Glow Stars, followed by Oyster in 1994. Oyster became the pivotal release in her early career, generating Walk This World and leading to an extended period of international touring.
Walk This World remains the clearest historical reference point for the new release. Issued in 1994, the single reached No. 28 in Australia and No. 69 in the United Kingdom, while Oyster also established Nova in European markets.
Nova subsequently released Siren in 1998, followed by South in 2001, Storm in 2003 and Redbird in 2005. Her catalogue later expanded through The Jasmine Flower, 300 Days At Sea, The Way It Feels and Pearl. Other Shores, a collection of cover songs, followed in 2022, while Breath And Air was released in 2025.
The commercial trajectory has changed across those releases, but Nova’s career has remained notably consistent in one respect: she has continued to record and tour rather than relying solely on the catalogue that established her in the 1990s. Her music has also appeared in film and television soundtracks, while Siren expanded her international profile and reached the Billboard 200.
That history gives In The Path Of Hurricanes a significance beyond its position as a new single. Thirty-two years after Walk This World, Nova is still using place, atmosphere and emotional ambiguity as songwriting material. The difference is that the natural landscape now carries an even more direct connection to the life she has lived.
The Orchard will be followed by a UK and European tour, with Nova scheduled to perform in England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The new material will therefore move from the studio into the live setting that Nova identifies as an important part of how repeated songs become part of an artist’s experience.
For an artist whose catalogue began with an international breakthrough in 1994, In The Path Of Hurricanes represents another chapter rather than a retrospective exercise. The Orchard is scheduled for release on October 30, 2026, with the new single providing its first substantial indication of where Nova’s songwriting has travelled after 32 years.
