The experimental folk collective will stage their immersive rituals across seven dates in March, supported by Lilith Max at most shows, while work continues on a fourth studio album after a period of hiatus.
Heilung will return to Australia and New Zealand in March 2027 for a seven-date tour headlined by two nights at the Sydney Opera House.
The European collective, known for transforming stages into ritual spaces through costume, percussion, ancient instruments and ceremony, has confirmed performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Auckland. The Sydney shows take place on consecutive nights at the Opera House, marking a significant booking for a band whose live presentations sit outside conventional concert formats.
Heilung describe their work as “amplified history.” Since forming in Copenhagen in 2014 around German tattoo artist and vocalist Kai Uwe Faust and Danish producer Christopher Juul, the group has drawn on texts, runic inscriptions and spiritual practices from the Iron Age and Viking Age. Maria Franz joined as a core vocalist in 2015. Their performances open with an ancient prayer led by Faust before the ensemble of warriors, elaborate costumes, incense, hypnotic drums and throat singing pull the audience into a space that deliberately blurs performer and spectator, past and present.
Faust has framed the project’s purpose clearly. “With singing these primordial songs we want to give tribute to these cultures, reconnect to the beginnings and remember that we all, from East to West, from past to present, are connected through the exchange of ideas and inspiring each other.”
The Australian and New Zealand dates arrive after a deliberate pause. Following a European tour that concluded in August 2025, Heilung stepped away from the road. They announced the end of that hiatus in September 2026 and returned to the studio later that year to begin work on their fourth studio album. New music is expected to mark the next phase of the project.
Alongside the stage work, Heilung’s sound has reached further through collaboration. The collective contributed to Ninja Theory’s video game Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. That partnership produced Sagas, a collection of recordings created for and inspired by the game that includes previously unheard material.
Joining Heilung for the Australian and New Zealand shows outside Sydney is German-American singer-songwriter Lilith Max. Her work draws on dark folklore, mythology and fantasy, creating a complementary atmosphere for the main rituals. Lilith Max will not appear at the two Sydney Opera House performances.
Heilung’s recorded catalogue currently stands at three studio albums. Ofnir was self-released in 2015 and later reissued. Futha followed in 2019 and Drif arrived in 2022 via Season of Mist. A live recording, Lifa, documented an early performance, with a further live release appearing more recently. The forthcoming fourth album remains untitled, but its development forms part of the backdrop to the 2027 tour.
The live presentation remains central to how Heilung are understood. The ensemble uses instruments that evoke early material culture, including skin drums, bones, rattles and reconstructed artefacts. Costumes draw on historical and spiritual traditions, turning each show into a multi-sensory event rather than a standard set of songs. The result is closer to ritual theatre than a conventional rock or folk concert, an approach that has drawn strong responses from audiences who have experienced it.
Ticket details for the tour have been staggered. A Sydney-only presale begins on Wednesday 21 October at midday AEDT, with general tickets for those two Opera House shows on sale from Friday 23 October at 9am AEDT. For all other dates an early bird presale opens on Tuesday 27 October at 9am local time, followed by general onsale on Thursday 29 October at 9am local time. Tickets are available through Destroy All Lines.
The seven-date run offers Australian and New Zealand audiences a chance to experience Heilung’s distinctive live form at major outdoor and indoor venues, including the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Riverstage and Spark Arena. For those who have not previously encountered the collective, the shows represent a rare opportunity to witness a performance style that prioritises immersion and historical reconnection over standard concert conventions.
