Musical sales had purpose and direction last week when new titles from Justin Bieber and One Direction accounted for one third of the sales in the Top 500 albums.

Justin Bieber’s ‘Purpose’ and One Direction’s ‘Made In The A.M’ sold a combined 75801 copies last week out of a total Top 500 sales of 254,029.

Bieber’s ‘Purpose’ sold 40,935 copies to come in at number one ahead of One Direction ‘Made In The A.M.’ with 34.866 sales. The number three album Elvis Presley ‘If I Can Dream’ sold 6,174.

The Bieber album was a strong digital seller with 73% of sales sold as downloads while the One Direction fan tended to go for the higher quality CD with 54% digital sales.

While the Bieber ‘Purpose’ album is the fastest selling album of 2015, Taylor Swift ‘1989’ did better in November 2014 with 43,428 sales.

Bieber’s reign with the fastest selling album of 2015 will be short-lived. Adele ‘25’ will easily sell more than Justin Bieber ‘25’ this week. The Adele album in on track to sell over 2,000,000 first week in the US. On a per capita basis, ‘25’ could do over 100,000 in Australia this week.

Other debuts in Australia this week were Kerser ‘Next Step’, (no 5, 5477 sales), Kylie Minogue ‘Kylie Christmas’ (no 7, 3423 sales), Conrad Sewell ‘EP’ (no 9, 2009 sales) and Jeff Lynne’s ELO ‘Alone In The Universe’ (no 15, 1649 sales).
