RY X will return to Australia with orchestral headline performances in Melbourne and Sydney in July 2027, ahead of the release of his fourth studio album, DUSK.
by Paul Cashmere
Australian-born singer-songwriter and producer RY X, the stage name of Ry Cuming, will return home in July 2027 for two headline performances with orchestra, playing Hamer Hall in Melbourne on July 14 and the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on July 19. The shows will be his first announced Australian dates following the planned early 2027 release of his fourth studio album, DUSK.
The Melbourne and Sydney concerts mark a significant return for an artist whose work has increasingly incorporated orchestral arrangements and large-scale performance settings. RY X has previously worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra and London Contemporary Orchestra, extending his atmospheric electronic and acoustic compositions into concert-hall settings.
Tickets for the two Australian performances go on sale at 3pm AEST on Friday, September 11. Frontier Members receive access to a 24-hour presale from 2pm AEST on Thursday, September 10.
The announcement also coincides with the release of new music. RY X will issue “Holy Water” on September 10, the first track from DUSK, which is scheduled for release in early 2027. The album will follow 2022’s Blood Moon and represents his first studio album announced since that record.
RY X will also be featured in a GAP Australia campaign this week. On Wednesday, September 9, GAP Australia is scheduled to host an exclusive live performance and celebration with the artist at The Calyx in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden.
RY X has developed a catalogue centred on sparse arrangements, electronic textures and an intimate vocal style. His best-known recordings include “Berlin”, “Only”, “All I Have”, “Salt”, “Sweat”, “Let You Go”, “YaYaYa” and “Oceans”. “Berlin”, originally released as the title track of his 2013 EP, became an international breakthrough and was subsequently covered by Sam Smith.
The artist’s relationship with orchestral performance has developed over more than a decade. He has presented work with the Deutsches Kammerorchester in Berlin, Münchner Rundfunkorchester in Munich, Brussels Philharmonic Soloists, London Contemporary Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Those collaborations have included performances at venues such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, Barbican, Royal Albert Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall and St Paul’s Cathedral. In 2023, RY X performed with the London Contemporary Orchestra at St Paul’s Cathedral, continuing a practice of presenting his music in venues beyond conventional club and theatre environments.
Cuming began writing music as a teenager after discovering Jeff Buckley’s Grace and has also identified Pearl Jam among his early influences. His first album, Ry Cuming, was released in 2010 after he had moved to Los Angeles. The record was followed by a period of collaborations and projects that expanded his work beyond his solo recordings.
In 2014, Cuming became part of The Acid with Adam Freeland and Steve Nalepa. The group released Liminal that year. He also developed the Howling project with Frank Wiedemann, resulting in the album Sacred Ground.
His second solo album, Dawn, was released in 2016, followed by Unfurl in 2019. Blood Moon was released in June 2022, with Cuming recording, producing and engineering most of the album himself at his home studio in Topanga.
His collaborative work has also included writing and production with artists including Drake, Diplo, Black Coffee and John Legend. RY X received a GRAMMY nomination in 2016 for Best Remixed Recording for “Only”, remixed by Kaskade and Lipless.
The planned DUSK album therefore continues a recording career that has moved between electronic music, singer-songwriter composition, production, dance, film and orchestral performance. The release of “Holy Water” will provide the first indication of the musical direction of the new project.
For Australian audiences, the July 2027 concerts will bring that expanded live approach back to two major concert halls. The Melbourne and Sydney dates are currently the only Australian performances announced, with both shows presented by Frontier Touring.
