The Sapphires is by far the most successful Australian movie of the year with news it has now grossed over $10 million at the Australian box-office in four weeks.

That places The Sapphires just behind 2011’s Red Dog that did $10.5 million in the first four weeks.

The Sapphires still was a way to go to beat Red Dog that eventually did $21.46 million making it the 8th highest grossing movie of all-time.

However, the all-time chart is flawed in that it is comparing ticket prices today to ticket prices of movies from decades ago. For example, The Man From Snowy River grossed $5 million in 1982 back when the ticket price was $6.50 compared to the average price today of $13. (The top ticket price today came be up to $28.50).

The Sapphires is the second major film for pop singer Jessica Mauboy. She also starred alongside Geoffrey Rush in Bran Nue Dae.

The Sapphires will be released in the UK in November.
