Yusuf Performs For Jimmy Fallon

Yusuf, the former Cat Stevens, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Friday night to sing a song from his latest album, Tell ‘Em I’m Gone.

Instead of choosing an original, Yusuf performed his rocked up cover of the 1939 song You Are My Sunshine.

Sunshine was written by country singer Jimmie Davis, who later served two stints as the governor of Louisiana, and Charles Mitchell and was recorded by Davis the following year. That version is enshrined in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.

The song was covered the next year by Gene Autrey, Mississippi John Hurt, Bing Crosby and many others and, later, by the likes of Ike and Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Brian Wilson.
