Phil Jamieson joins Noise11 to discuss his second solo album, 10 Charlie, and reveals why the record became his most personal work to date.
In this in-depth interview, the Grinspoon frontman explains how 10 Charlie was never originally intended to be released. The songs were written during hotel-room downtime while touring with Grinspoon following the release of Whatever, Whatever. Created largely on GarageBand and initially kept for himself, the material eventually found its way to Origin Music, who encouraged Jamieson to turn it into a full album.
Phil talks about reconnecting with producer and collaborator Oscar Dawson, recording the album in just five days in Melbourne, and working alongside songwriters including Dave Lane and Ben Edgar.
He also explains the meaning behind the title 10 Charlie, named after an airline seat, describing the album as a kind of emotional boarding pass designed to transport listeners to different places.
The conversation delves into the deeply personal themes on the record, including self-acceptance, grief and finding joy during turbulent periods. Jamieson discusses songs such as ‘Blue As The Sunlight’, ‘Reading Keats in Byron Bay’ and the epic closing track ‘The Soft Return’, which he calls his favourite song on the album.
Phil also previews his upcoming tour, revealing plans for unexpected cover versions including Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’ and ‘Electric Dreams’ by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder. He also explains why he deliberately avoids turning his solo shows into Grinspoon unplugged performances.
