The Angels are celebrating 50 years since the release of their debut album and guitarist John Brewster joined Paul Cashmere for an in-depth conversation about the band’s earliest days, their evolution from an acoustic jug band into one of Australia’s greatest rock acts, and the lasting legacy of their first record.

In this Noise11 interview, Brewster reflects on working with legendary producers Harry Vanda and George Young, the influence of AC/DC, the arrival of Buzz Bidstrup and Chris Bailey, and the pivotal decision to move Doc Neeson from bass guitar to centre-stage frontman.

Brewster also discusses forgotten album tracks including ‘Take Me Home’, ‘High On You’, ‘Hot Lucy’, ‘Shelter From The Rain’ and ‘You Got Me Running’, revealing the stories behind the songs and why many of them disappeared from the band’s live set.

The conversation explores the original version of ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’, including why Brewster still prefers the first single recording over the album version, and how George Young’s production approach helped shape the future direction of The Angels.

Along the way, Brewster shares memories of AC/DC, writing songs in the band’s formative years, and the gradual transformation that led to classics such as ‘Take A Long Line’, ‘Marseilles’ and ‘I Ain’t The One’.

Now more than five decades after their debut, The Angels continue to attract younger audiences while remaining one of Australia’s most enduring live bands.

Watch Paul Cashmere’s full interview with John Brewster as The Angels mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album and prepare for another major year of touring across Australia.
