The Mark Of Cain’s Kim Scott and Eli Green join Paul Cashmere at Noise11 to discuss one of the band’s busiest periods in years, the 25th anniversary of This Is This, the long-awaited next album and how the songwriting process has changed.
Eli Green has spent more than a decade working with The Mark Of Cain, learning the band’s catalogue and recreating the drumming performances of earlier members for anniversary tours. Now he is moving further into the creative process, writing complete songs and bringing them into the band.
Kim Scott explains how The Mark Of Cain’s songwriting has evolved across four decades, from the early punk-influenced method of building songs from riffs in a room to Eli’s more complete studio-based approach. The pair also discuss why the two methods can work together and how Eli’s knowledge of the band’s catalogue has helped shape the new material.
The conversation also goes behind the scenes of This Is This, which turns 25 in 2026. Kim reveals why several songs from the album have never been performed live, including material completed with Gang Of Four’s Andy Gill in the UK.
Kim also reflects on The Mark Of Cain’s friendship and working relationship with Henry Rollins, the band’s 2022 induction into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame and the surprising fact that This Is This was the group’s highest-charting album.
The band also discusses “Hardcase”, the unfinished demo released as a preview of the next chapter, and the plan to complete seven or eight songs before recording a new album, potentially for release in the second half of 2027.
Paul Cashmere talks to Kim Scott and Eli Green about The Mark Of Cain, This Is This, “Hardcase”, songwriting, touring, festival setlists, Andy Gill, Henry Rollins and what comes next.
