Michael Buble has the No.1 album on the ARIA Chart this week with his seasonal “Christmas” album, which was helped during the week by Channel 7 playing a musical special of Michael, plus the album is now certified 9x▲ Platinum in sales.

Last week I mentioned that “Christmas” is the first album in ARIA Albums Chart history to score the No.1 position in three consecutive years, but what I neglected to mention was that it’s only the second album in Australian (not just ARIA) chart history to have secured a No.1 placing on three separate chart runs. The other such feat was achieved by the ‘Grease’ soundtrack, which originally spent nine weeks at the top in 1978 (7 weeks from 14-Aug to 25-Sep and then two further weeks from 20-Nov), then when the “Grease Megamix” went to the top in 1991, it helped the soundtrack back to the top for three more weeks from 30-Jun-91, whilst the 20th anniversary of the film helped it back for a single week on 16-Aug-98, giving the “Grease” soundtrack a total of 13 weeks at the top.

“Christmas” for Michael Buble brings his tally at the top in Australia now to 29 weeks, one week behind the 30 weeks achieved by both Michael Jackson and Elton John. But possibly putting a stop to Michael’s run is the surprise release of the self-titled fifth album for Beyonce, which was released only on iTunes for the first week, and it lands at No.2 this week, with the physical CD out as of Friday the 20th, meaning those sales will be included in next weeks chart.

So for now Beyonce lands her fifth consecutive Top 10 album, and her third No.2 placing as her first set “Dangerously in Love” (June 2003) debuted at No.3 and climbed to No.2 the following week, whilst her most recent album “4” debuted and peaked at No.2 in July 2011. In between she scored Top 10 placements with “B’Day” (HP-8, Sept 2006) and “I Am… Sacha Fierce” (HP-3, entered Nov 2008, peaked Oct 2009), plus the new album debuts with a Gold (●) sales certification.

The Twelfth Man climbs back to his former peak of No.3 with his “Willy Nilly – Biggest Hits” collection and Human Nature hold at No.4 with their seasonal set “The Christmas Album”. Katy Perry is also on hold at No.5 with “Prism”, which is now 2x▲ Platinum, but down three places to No.6 is One Direction with “Midnight Memories”. Picking up a ▲ Platinum certification for his debut self-titled album is Taylor Henderson, which slips five places to No.7 this week, whilst X-Factor winner Dami Im is down a single place to No.8. Also down a single spot are Eminem with “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” to No.9 and Lorde with “Pure Heroine” at No.10.

NEW PEAKERS & MOVERS: “To Be Loved” for Michael Buble is back up a couple of places to No.14, and “Reset” for Tina Arena is back up four places to No.15, and it is now ▲ Platinum in sales. Neil Finn and Paul Kelly jump back up ten places to No.17 with their live set “Goin’ Your Way”, and Bruno Mars’ “Unorthodox Jukebox” is back up to No.20 this week. Imagine Dragons land a ▲ Platinum sales certification for their “Night Visions” album, which is back up five spots to No.26 and due to his recent tour, Jack Johnson climbs back up nine places to No.34 with “From Here to Now to You”. Jason DeRulo is back up to No.41 with “Tattoos”, Troy Cassar-Daly & Adam Harvey jump back up fifteen places to No.45 with “The Great Country Songbook”, and Boy & Bear are back up ten places to No.49 with “Harlequin Dream” after this weeks tour announcement.

DOWN DOWN: After a week back inside the Top 10, “Moon Landing” for James Blunt is back down two places to No.12, but it also picks up a ▲ Platinum certification, whilst scoring Gold (●) in sales are Robbie Williams with “Swings Both Ways” (12 to 13) and “The Best of Nickelback Volume 1 (17 to 19). Flume drops back nine places to No.29 with his self-titled set, and now that her tour is over Taylor Swift is back down eighteen places to No.32 with “Red”. The Jai Waetford EP halves itself, dropping twenty-one places to No.42 this week, whilst also falling hard is “Common Courtesy” for A Day to Remember (38 to 55), “Because the Internet” for Childish Gambino (37 to 63), “All the Little Lights” by Passenger (44 to 64), “Shangri-La” for Jake Bugg (52 to 80), “Britney Jean” for Britney Spears (47 to 83) and “Girl on Fire” for Alicia Keys (61 to 97), although a new version of this album does also enter, more below.

XMAS ALBUMS: With Mr. Buble and Human Nature entrenched within the Top 5 this week, the next festive album to chart is the Susan Boyle set “Home for Christmas” (13 to 16), followed at No.30 by “Merry Christmas” for Mariah Carey (28 to 30), whilst holding at No.33 is the Kelly Clarkson seasonal set “Wrapped in Red”. Rod Stewart is up a couple of places to No.40 with “Merry Christmas, Baby”, whilst moving up into the Top 50 for the first time are Marina Prior with “Candlelight Christmas” (71 to 46) and Anthony Callea with “This is Christmas” (53 to 47). Last year the third Michael Crawford festive set reached No.70, and this week “O Holy Night” returns at a new peak of No.57, with the final set charting being “Glee: The Christmas Album”, which drops thirty-three places to No.89 this week. We say goodbye to “Dora’s Christmas” (HP-45) and the il Divo set “The Christmas Collection” (HP-16).

The only other album to enter the Top 50 this week is recent ARIA Award winner for ‘Song of the Year’, Matt Corby with a No.48 entry for “Live on the Resolution Tour”. This is his second albums chart entry, as his “iTunes Sessions” charted this time last year (17-Dec) reaching No.19 and staying upon the chart for a single week.

Lower 50: With London Grammar landing their first Top 40 entry this week with “Strong”, their former No.2 album “If You Wait” is back up fifteen places to No.52, whilst Bon Jovi score a Gold (●) sales certification for their former No.1 set “What About Now”, which is down four places to No.61. Rudimental also see an album leap due to a new Top 10 single in “Free”, as their “Home” set is back up twelve places to No.71, whilst the longest running ARIA Album (ever) at 334 weeks now, “The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac” is back up thirteen places to No.75. The ABC re-screened the doco ‘Abba: Bang a Boomerang’ this past week, and that sees their “Abba Gold” set back up sixteen places to No.81, whilst they re-enter at #100 with their “18 Hits” collection.

Also returning this week are the albums “Babel” for Mumford & Sons (#92), “The Best of Cold Chisel – All for You” (#96) and “…Like Clockwork” for Queens of the Stone Age (#98). “Sharkmouth” for Russell Morris is also back in at No.93, whilst the deluxe (CD/DVD) edition debuts at No.78, whilst also new to the charts is the deluxe/tour edition of Alicia Keys’ most recent album, “Girl on Fire”/”VH1 Storyteller”, coming in at No.79 on the back of her recent tour here.
