Boz Scaggs The Accidental Winemaker INTERVIEW

Boz Scaggs has been quietly evolving from musician to wine-maker over the years after moving to the Napa Valley in the mid-1990s and becoming an accidental grapevine grower.

After buying the property in 1996 a friend suggested he plant some grape vines. Now 17 years later, his Scaggs Winery produces a premium red wine from the region.

“Its called Scaggs Vineyard,” Boz tells Noise11.com. “My wife and I moved up to the wine growing area The Napa Valley outside San Francisco about 17 years ago. We just sort of became by accident grapevine growers, along with fruit trees and olive trees. We have a few acres of grapes and we turn them into wine. We’ve been making wine for about 12 years”.

What started out as a hobby for Boz and Dominique Scaggs has now become a business. “We started selling it commercially three or four years ago,” he says. “Its a small enterprise and we are very proud of our wine. Its just been a great way of us connecting with where we live. Its been a hobby for some time but now its a small business. We enjoy it. People seem to enjoy our wine and we enjoy serving it”.

The wine is available for sale at the Scaggs Winery website. “We make one blend of red wine and we produce about 400 cases a year,” Boz says.

Boz Scaggs will take a break from picking grapes to head to Australia this week to perform at Deni Blues & Roots Festival and Bluesfest. He will also perform shows in Hobart, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth on the tour.
