Ringo Starr Pays Tribute To Sir George Martin

Ringo Starr has paid tribute to Sir George Martin after news of the death of The Beatles producer at age 90 today.

In a series of Tweets Ringo Starr said,”

“Thank you for all your love and kindness George peace and love xx”

“God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family love Ringo and Barbara George will be missed xxx”

It was George Martin who suggested The Beatles fire their drummer Pete Best soon after signing the group to Parlophone Records. John Lennon asked Starr, then the drummer for Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, to join the band.

Initially the fans were unimpressed and protested outside Ringo’s house after his first gig with the band. One fan even gave George Harrison a black eye after hearing the news.

Martin was cautious about replacing Best immediately with Ringo and used session drummer Andy White on the recording of the band’s first single ‘Love Me Do’. However it is Ringo you hear on the ‘Please Please Me’ album version of the song.

Martin later clarified his decision saying, “I simply didn’t know what Ringo was like and I wasn’t prepared to take any risks.”
