Montaigne is taking a decade-long trip back to where their recording career began with a national tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album, Glorious Heights.

Released in August 2016, Glorious Heights marked the arrival of an artist who was still in their late teens and early twenties, experimenting with songwriting and finding a distinctive voice. Ten years later, Montaigne is approaching the record from a very different artistic and personal position.

In conversation with Noise11’s Paul Cashmere, Montaigne reflects on returning to an album they made when they were 18 and 19, revisiting recordings they had not heard in their original form for years and rediscovering songs that have largely disappeared from their live repertoire.

The anniversary has also prompted Montaigne to consider the difference between the artist they were then and the person they have become. They acknowledge some of the youthful songwriting with affection, while admitting that parts of the lyric writing now make them cringe.

The Glorious Heights tour will feature the album performed in full, followed by four or five songs representing Montaigne’s subsequent records. The shows also provide an opportunity to revive songs that have not been performed regularly for years, including “Lie To Myself” and “I Am Behind You”.

Montaigne also discusses the unexpected longevity of their career, the influence of Eurovision, their admiration for David Byrne, the importance of continuing to make music and why future album anniversaries could become a regular reason to return to the road.
