Widow’s Bay dominated comedy while The Pitt retained the drama crown, but Apple TV emerged as the biggest platform winner at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Pitt and Widow’s Bay were the major series winners at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Apple TV claiming more Emmy trophies than any other television or streaming platform. Apple TV finished with 28 wins across the 2026 awards, ahead of HBO Max with 21 and Netflix with 16.
The result marked a significant night for streaming television. Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay was the most awarded programme of the year with 14 Emmys, while HBO Max’s The Pitt successfully defended its Outstanding Drama Series title. The medical drama also delivered another acting Emmy for Noah Wyle.
Widow’s Bay won Outstanding Comedy Series, with Matthew Rhys taking Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn added supporting acting wins, while Katie Dippold won for comedy writing and Hiro Murai won for comedy directing. The programme had already collected eight Creative Arts Emmys before the main ceremony, taking its overall total to 14.
The Pitt’s second consecutive drama victory came alongside Wyle’s second straight Outstanding Lead Actor Emmy. Rhea Seehorn won Outstanding Lead Actress for Apple TV’s Pluribus, giving Vince Gilligan’s series another major award after Gilligan won Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
Jean Smart won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, extending her run to five consecutive victories for the series. Matthew Rhys created one of the night’s most notable records by winning both the comedy lead actor award and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me.
Allison Janney won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat, while Tom Pelphrey won Outstanding Supporting Actor for Task. Sally Field won the limited-series lead actress category for Remarkably Bright Creatures.
The television side also produced a notable post-cancellation victory. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series after CBS cancelled the programme in May 2026.

The platform breakdown underlines the continuing shift in television awards. Apple TV, which entered the ceremony behind HBO Max and Netflix in nominations, finished first in total Emmy wins with 28. HBO Max followed with 21 and Netflix with 16.
Among the broadcast networks, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert provided CBS with its most prominent result, while ABC’s Abbott Elementary and NBC’s Saturday Night Live were among the nominated network productions without taking the headline series awards listed above. The major categories were consequently dominated by streaming services, particularly Apple TV and HBO Max.
For Apple TV, the combination of Widow’s Bay and Pluribus established the service as the leading Emmy platform of 2026. HBO Max retained the flagship drama prize through The Pitt, while Netflix’s strongest results in the supplied winners included Matthew Rhys for The Beast in Me and Sally Field for Remarkably Bright Creatures. The full awards tally therefore gave Apple TV its first overall Emmy platform victory.
