Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings will be released on November 6, bringing together the professionally recorded shows from the second leg of Dylan’s landmark 1976 tour in a 39-CD collection. Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings will also issue the complete May 16, 1976 Fort Worth concert as a three-LP set, remixed from the original multitrack tapes.

The 1976 recordings document the tour from its opening night at Lakeland, Florida’s Civic Center on April 18 through to the final show at Salt Lake City on May 25. The box set contains 381 tracks, with 371 being previously unreleased, and includes performances from venues across Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

A new release from the Fort Worth concert, “Going, Going, Gone”, has been issued ahead of the collection. The Fort Worth show is also significant because five performances from the concert appeared on Dylan’s 1976 album Hard Rain, while material from the May 23 Fort Collins performance was used for the NBC television special of the same name.

The collection provides a substantially broader picture of a tour that has previously been represented through selected recordings rather than a comprehensive sequence of performances. The official announcement describes the new set as capturing all professionally recorded shows from the second leg using the original tape sources.

The second Rolling Thunder Revue leg reunited Dylan with Joan Baez, who performed with him on a number of dates, including versions of “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Railroad Boy”. The touring musicians included Rob Stoner on bass, Scarlet Rivera on violin, Howie Wyeth on drums, Mick Ronson on guitar, Steven Soles, David Mansfield and T Bone Burnett.

Burnett, reflecting on the tour for the new collection, describes Rolling Thunder as a formative moment that preceded the emergence of punk artists including The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols. His assessment places the tour within a broader shift in live rock performance during the mid-1970s.

Mikal Gilmore provides the liner notes for the box set, while the package also contains rare photographs. The Fort Worth vinyl edition contains 22 tracks and presents the complete concert rather than selections assembled from multiple dates.

The new release substantially extends Dylan’s documented Rolling Thunder catalogue. The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975, The Rolling Thunder Revue, issued in 2002, was the first major official collection to draw together recordings from the 1975 tour. That two-disc release preceded the much larger 14-CD Bob Dylan: The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings, issued in 2019.

The 2019 collection concentrated on the first leg of the tour, incorporating five complete professionally recorded Dylan sets alongside rehearsals and rarities. It included 148 tracks, more than 100 of them previously unreleased. The earlier 2002 release had drawn primarily from the 1975 performances, while the 2019 box set provided a much more extensive account of that first phase.

The 1976 collection therefore shifts the focus to the second leg, including the period in which the songs associated with Desire were becoming established in Dylan’s live repertoire. “One More Cup of Coffee”, “Oh, Sister”, “Romance in Durango” and “Isis” appear repeatedly across the 1976 performances, alongside long-established material such as “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “Blowin’ in the Wind”, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and “Lay, Lady, Lay”.

The scale of the new archive also allows performances to be compared from one night to another. Several songs appear in materially different arrangements or with variations in length and completeness, while the inclusion of complete concerts such as Fort Worth provides a fuller picture of how the set developed during the tour.

The 1976 Rolling Thunder Revue also occupies an unusual place in Dylan’s recording history because the official releases to date have represented the period through selected performances, broadcasts and later archival compilations. The new 39-disc collection brings those surviving professionally recorded performances together in chronological form, allowing the second leg to be heard across its full documented span.

The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings will be released November 6 on Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings. The Fort Worth three-LP set will be released on the same date.
