Twenty years after its release, Christina Aguilera’s ambitious double album Back To Basics remains one of the defining artistic statements of her career, combining classic jazz, blues and soul influences with contemporary pop and R&B production while marking a significant creative shift for the singer.

Christina Aguilera’s Back To Basics reaches its 20th anniversary on 9 August, marking two decades since the ambitious double album redefined her artistic direction and became one of the biggest international releases of 2006. The album debuted at No. 1 in more than 15 countries, including Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, while establishing a new creative identity built around vintage musical influences and modern production.
Released through RCA Records in August 2006, Back To Basics followed the commercial and critical success of 2002’s Stripped, but took Aguilera in a markedly different direction. Rather than continuing contemporary pop trends, she drew inspiration from artists including Billie Holiday, Otis Redding, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, describing the project as a tribute to performers whose music shaped her own development.
The album also represented one of the most ambitious mainstream pop releases of its era. Spread across two discs, it blended sampled rhythm and blues, hip hop and soul on its first half before shifting towards largely live-recorded material on the second. Aguilera served as executive producer, assembling a diverse production team including DJ Premier, Linda Perry, Mark Ronson, Rich Harrison, Kwamé, Rob Lewis and Big Tank.
Recording sessions took place between February 2005 and April 2006 in studios across the United States and the United Kingdom. Aguilera encouraged producers to reinterpret vintage musical styles through a contemporary lens, resulting in a project that balanced classic instrumentation with modern recording techniques.
Speaking about the album’s origins, Aguilera said her discovery of classic soul and jazz records became “an education and an inspiration” that she would eventually translate into Back To Basics, describing it as “paying homage and utmost respect to some of the greatest musicians and artists of all time. The voices that paved the way for mine.”
The project was also deeply personal. Several songs reflected events in Aguilera’s own life, including her 2005 marriage to Jordan Bratman. Tracks such as “Ain’t No Other Man”, “Makes Me Wanna Pray”, “Save Me From Myself” and “The Right Man” explored themes of commitment and family, while “Oh Mother” revisited her childhood experiences. Elsewhere, “Still Dirrty” revisited the themes of personal independence introduced on her earlier hit “Dirrty”.
To accompany the album’s musical direction, Aguilera introduced a new visual identity. Retiring the “Xtina” image associated with her previous work, she adopted the alter ego Baby Jane, inspired by the 1962 film What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?. Her styling drew heavily on classic Hollywood cinema, with platinum blonde hair, vintage fashion and photography influenced by stars including Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard and Greta Garbo. Photographer Ellen von Unwerth captured the album artwork during sessions at the Hollywood Dell hotel and Forty Deuce in Hollywood.
Commercially, Back To Basics became one of Aguilera’s biggest worldwide successes. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 346,000 copies, becoming her second US chart-topping album. Internationally it also reached No. 1 across Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom among other territories.
In Australia, the album topped the ARIA Albums Chart and remained on the chart for 40 weeks, later earning double platinum certification. Worldwide sales exceeded five million copies, with two million sold in the United States.
The album produced several successful singles. “Ain’t No Other Man” introduced the project and won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 49th Grammy Awards. It was followed internationally by “Hurt” and “Candyman”, while “Slow Down Baby” received a single release exclusively in Australia. “Oh Mother” was released in selected European markets.
Promotion extended well beyond the album release. Aguilera performed material from the record at the MTV Movie Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Saturday Night Live and other major television appearances before launching the Back To Basics Tour. Running between late 2006 and late 2008, the 81-date production visited North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East, grossing more than US$90 million and becoming one of the highest grossing tours by a female artist at the time.
Critical opinion on the album reflected its ambitious scope. Many reviewers praised its willingness to step beyond contemporary pop conventions and its broad musical influences, while others questioned whether the double album format made the project longer than necessary. Despite differing views, Back To Basics earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album and has since been reassessed by many critics as one of Aguilera’s most adventurous releases.
Twenty years on, Back To Basics remains a significant chapter in Aguilera’s catalogue. By combining vintage American music traditions with contemporary pop production, it demonstrated an artist willing to take creative risks at the height of her commercial success, producing an album whose influence continues to be recognised two decades after its release.
