Justin Davies of The Tortured Souls joins Paul Cashmere for an in-depth Noise11 interview about the unexpected journey that led to his debut album.
After decades building successful businesses and pursuing philanthropic interests, Justin returned to music in 2023 following a deeply personal loss. What began as an attempt to process his feelings through songwriting developed into 11 or 12 songs and eventually became the foundation of The Tortured Souls.
Justin explains how he bought a guitar that inspired him to write his first song, despite having very little formal musical knowledge. He discusses his unconventional songwriting approach, finding melodies by ear and allowing lyrics and emotions to determine the direction of each composition.
The conversation explores the musicians who helped transform the original songs into finished recordings, including former members of The Sleepy Jackson and musicians associated with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
Justin also discusses working with producer Rob Grant, the different musical directions across songs such as “Walk With Me”, “Gold Line” and “No Tomorrows”, and how the arrangements developed naturally when the musicians began playing together.
He reflects on growing up around a musical family, including Ashley, Tanya and Lee, and how watching them perform in bands left a lasting impression.
The interview also looks ahead to The Tortured Souls’ November 26 album launch, the eight-piece live lineup and Justin’s hope that music might eventually become his full-time pursuit.
For Justin, songwriting and performing provide something beyond a musical career: a sense of peace and a feeling of being where he is meant to be.
