A seven-act arena production, solo performances, a Katy Perry cover and a surprise appearance from The Wiggles gave Melbourne a memorable night on the Everyone’s A Star! tour.
5 Seconds Of Summer brought the noise back to Rod Laver Arena on Monday night, delivering a full-scale pop production that revisited the band’s early arena years before introducing an unexpected cast of Australian children’s entertainment favourites for the finale. The Wiggles, Dorothy the Dinosaur and original Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt joined the Sydney band onstage for a closing performance that gave Melbourne something it was unlikely to have anticipated.
The appearance came during the Australian leg of 5 Seconds Of Summer’s Everyone’s A Star! world tour, supporting their sixth studio album, released in 2025. Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin have built their career around the transition from teenage pop phenomenon to an internationally established band. Monday night’s production turned that journey into the central theme of the show.
The seven-act presentation played like a deliberately exaggerated music industry mockumentary, incorporating a pink limousine, staged interview footage reminiscent of 60 Minutes and a runway extending into the audience. It gave the concert a narrative structure while allowing the four members to move between the theatrical elements and the music.
The audience supplied much of the night’s atmosphere. The volume of screaming recalled the band’s earliest arena appearances, particularly during the opening run of Not Ok and No. 1 Obsession. The reaction continued throughout the performance, with the beach balls during She Looks So Perfect adding to the sense of a crowd treating the songs as communal celebrations rather than simply revisiting an earlier chapter of the band’s career.
Act I, The Peak, opened with two tracks from Everyone’s A Star! before moving into Teeth from 2020’s Calm. Hemmings handled the vocal demands with a combination of lower-register grit and falsetto, while the large screens alternated between live performance footage and the production’s continuing storyline.
The Fall, Act II, brought together material from across the band’s catalogue. Easier and No Shame from Calm sat alongside More from Youngblood and She’s Kinda Hot from 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good. Newer songs Istillfeelthesame, Boyband and Telephone Busy maintained the connection to the current album. Evolve was performed with the pink limousine still occupying centre stage and Irwin’s drum kit positioned on top.
The mood changed for Act III, The Yearning. Bad Omens from 5SOS5 and Ghost Of You from Youngblood brought a more reflective atmosphere, with white confetti falling as the audience shifted from screaming to singing. I’m Scared I’ll Never Sleep Again, another track from the new album, completed the section.
Act IV, The Breakup, was particularly significant because it acknowledged the individual musical careers the four members have pursued outside 5 Seconds Of Summer.
Each musician received a solo performance, with the other members providing backing. Hemmings performed Starting Line from his 2021 album When Facing the Things We Turn Away From. Irwin followed with Have U Found What Ur Looking For? from Superbloom, while Hood performed Don’t Forget You Love Me from his 2025 release Order Chaos Order. Clifford completed the sequence with Enough from Sidequest.
Rather than treating the solo projects as departures from the band, the segment incorporated them into the wider story of 5 Seconds Of Summer.
A QR code invitation earlier in the evening had allowed fans to vote for a secret song. Melbourne’s selection was Teenage Dream, the Katy Perry hit that has previously featured in the band’s live repertoire. It provided an unexpected change of direction before Act V, The Rise, moved into Amnesia.
Act VI, The Beginning, was a return to the catalogue that established the band internationally. English Love Affair, Voodoo Doll and Don’t Stop brought the early 5SOS sound back into focus, followed by Jet Black Heart and She Looks So Perfect. The latter remains one of the band’s defining songs, with its opening lines prompting another arena-wide response.
After a lengthy blackout, the band returned for Act VII, The Return. This was where the evening took its most distinctly Australian turn.
The Wiggles joined 5 Seconds Of Summer for Everyone’s A Star!, accompanied by Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus and the Tree of Wisdom. Original Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt was also part of the appearance.
The crossover brought together two very different Australian musical institutions, with the current Wiggles lineup sharing the stage with a band whose international career began in the same country. Yellow Wiggle Tsehay Hawkins said the group enjoyed celebrating Australian talent and had been looking forward to bringing some Wiggly magic to the performance.
The visual contrast between 5 Seconds Of Summer’s arena production and The Wiggles’ instantly recognisable characters provided the night’s most unexpected moment. It was also a fitting conclusion to a show built around the idea of being a star and the different identities that come with that ambition.
Youngblood closed the concert, returning the focus to the four musicians after the Wiggles appearance.
Fifteen years after their first international performances, 5 Seconds Of Summer remain capable of commanding an arena with the songs that established them, while giving their current material and individual creative interests a place in the show. Melbourne received the complete package: a theatrical production, a substantial catalogue retrospective, four solo performances and a finale that brought Dorothy the Dinosaur into the world of arena rock.
