Perth rock band Electric State have released their new single Head In Hands, a song about the aftermath of a relationship that has reached its limit despite attempts to keep it together. The track is the latest preview of Standing On The Edge, the band’s forthcoming album scheduled for January 8, 2027, and follows the 2026 singles What Do You Want and Stand Up. Electric State will support the release with a series of Western Australian and South Australian shows through October.

Head In Hands focuses on the emotional consequences of trying to preserve something that is no longer sustainable. Electric State describe the song as dealing with life, love and loss, particularly the point at which words can become painful enough to end a relationship rather than repair it.

The single continues the Perth quartet’s development of a sound that draws together progressive grunge, punk and hard rock. It follows a run of releases that has established Electric State as an active presence on the Western Australian live circuit while building a catalogue ahead of their second album.

Standing On The Edge is scheduled for release on January 8, 2027, with pre-orders currently available. Head In Hands therefore becomes part of the album’s lead-up campaign, following What Do You Want and Stand Up, both of which have received radio airplay.

Electric State formed in Perth in 2019 with Russell Christie on guitar, Paul Leahy on bass, Rob Viney on lead vocals and guitar, and Bill Shaw on drums. The group’s music combines heavy guitar work with melodic and rhythmic elements, reflecting influences that include Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Rival Sons, Gyroscope and Killswitch Engage.

The band’s first album, Green Machine, provided the foundation for their subsequent live and international activity. In 2023, Electric State toured Japan and the United Kingdom and also performed support dates with US rock band Skillet.

Their live profile has been an important part of the band’s development. Electric State have performed at Perth venues including The Amplifier Bar, The Sewing Room, Lynott’s Lounge and Badlands, while their festival history includes closing two stages at the Nannup Music Festival in 2024.

The band’s 2026 activity has also marked a change in their recording and label relationship. What Do You Want was released through XMusic after Electric State signed with the label. The single was recorded at Tunafish Studios by Andy Hill and mixed by Anton Hagop, whose production and engineering credits include work with Silverchair, Missy Higgins and Birds of Tokyo.

Stand Up followed in March, with the song taking a more confrontational lyrical approach. Where that track addressed the need to defend personal beliefs and resist outside pressures, Head In Hands turns inward, examining the personal fallout that can follow when efforts to save a relationship have failed.

The three singles provide different perspectives on the material leading into Standing On The Edge. What Do You Want established Electric State’s association with XMusic, Stand Up expanded the band’s current run of releases, and Head In Hands introduces a more emotionally focused subject.

The forthcoming album will also represent the next major stage in a catalogue that began with Green Machine. Electric State’s progress from Perth venues to international touring has been accompanied by recognition in Western Australia, including wins for Most Popular Live Act and Most Popular New Act at the Western Australian Music Awards in 2020.

The band’s next live commitments will take them through Perth, Adelaide and regional Western Australia. Electric State will perform at The Bird in Perth on September 5, followed by an appearance at the Hard Rock Festival at Woodshed in Adelaide on October 3.

The October schedule continues with a Perth performance at Magnet House on October 9, where Electric State will support VSpy VSpy. The band then heads to The Castle in York, Western Australia, for the Twang Festival on October 17.

With Head In Hands now available and Standing On The Edge set for January, Electric State have moved into the next phase of their album cycle. The remaining 2026 shows will provide further opportunities to introduce the new material to audiences before the full record is released in early 2027.
