Boom Crash Opera have cancelled their remaining live performances for 2026 after lead singer Dale Ryder was advised he requires open-heart surgery.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, the Melbourne band confirmed Ryder must undergo a quadruple bypass, bringing their live commitments for the year to an end following their recent appearance on the Red Hot Summer tour.

“Boom Crash Opera regret to announce the cancellation of our remaining live performances for the rest of the year, as Dale Ryder must undergo open-heart surgery (quadruple bypass),” the band said.

The group revealed that Ryder had been experiencing symptoms behind the scenes, despite continuing to deliver the energetic performances audiences witnessed on the recent Red Hot Summer dates.

“As audiences on the recent Red Hot Summer tour can attest, Dale is an incredibly lively and energetic performer. Behind the scenes, however, he has been experiencing symptoms that require immediate medical attention.”

The band said Ryder’s health must take priority, while expressing disappointment at having to cancel the remaining shows.

“We are all immensely disappointed that we cannot fulfil these upcoming shows, but Dale’s health is our absolute priority. We want to thank everyone for their understanding, and we look forward to returning to the stage in 2027 with a fire in our bellies.”

Ryder has also asked fans to respect his privacy while he concentrates on the operation and recovery.

“Dale appreciates everyone’s concern but has requested people refrain from contacting him directly while he focuses on his recovery and his family.”

The announcement interrupts another period of activity for one of Melbourne’s enduring Australian rock bands. Formed in late 1984, Boom Crash Opera developed around the songwriting partnership of Peter Farnan and Richard Pleasance, with Ryder joining as lead vocalist alongside drummer Peter “Maz” Maslen and keyboard player Greg O’Connor.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 1987, established the band nationally with the singles “Great Wall” and “Hands Up in the Air”. Their second album, These Here Are Crazy Times!, reached number 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart in 1989 and delivered one of their best-known songs, “Onion Skin”.

The single also crossed into the United States, reaching the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, giving Boom Crash Opera an international profile beyond their Australian success.

Subsequent albums Fabulous Beast (1993), Born (1995) and Gizmo Mantra (1997) maintained the band’s presence on Australian radio and the live circuit.

The line-up changed during the 1990s. Pleasance departed in 1992 because of tinnitus, while O’Connor left in 1994. The core working line-up subsequently centred on Ryder, Farnan and Maslen, with bassist John Favaro completing the current group. Ryder also took a break from the band between 2016 and 2019 before returning.

In March 2025, Boom Crash Opera released “Latest Hustle”, their first new single in 28 years. The release marked a significant return to recording after a lengthy period without new material and suggested the band still had creative ambitions beyond its established catalogue.

Ryder’s stage presence has remained central to Boom Crash Opera’s identity, making the news particularly concerning for audiences who saw the band perform on the recent Red Hot Summer tour.

The band has not disclosed when the operation will take place or provided a recovery timetable. Its stated intention is to resume live performances in 2027, although that will depend on Ryder’s recovery.

For now, the priority is his health, with Boom Crash Opera putting the remainder of their 2026 schedule on hold.
