The US rockers have ended their three-year break and are back with a record to be released in May this year, making the announcement on their official website.

Along with the album, which is entitled Save Rock And Roll, the band will complete a tour of North America commencing in May and finishing at the end of June.

A new single from the stars called My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up), has also been made available online from today.

To promote their return to the music scene, Fall Out Boy will also be playing a string of surprise shows around the world commencing tonight in Chicago and ending up in Melbourne, Australia, at the end of March.

In an official statement the group explained that their split was only ever a temporary decision.

“When we were kids the only thing that got us through most days was music. It’s why we started Fall Out Boy in the first place. This isn’t a reunion because we never broke up. We needed to plug back in and make some music that matters to us. The future of Fall Out Boy starts now. Save Rock And Roll ….” they said.

During the break all of the members pursued different musical projects.

Lead singer Patrick Stump released a solo album and bass player Pete Wentz launched a project called Black Cards.

The Illinois foursome – made up of Pete, Patrick, Andy Hurley and Joe Trohman – announced they were taking a break from each other after the release of their greatest hits album in 2009.
