Former The Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell has cancelled his Australian tour, just months after the postponed dates were moved to December 2026.
Hugh Cornwell has cancelled his Australian tour, ending plans for a six-date December run that had itself been rescheduled earlier this year. A statement posted through Cornwell’s social media channels says the cancellation is due to “unforeseen circumstances”, with promoters confirming that fans will receive full refunds automatically through their original payment method.
The cancellation comes only months after Cornwell’s Australian tour was moved from its original schedule to December 2026.
In May, promoter Troubadour Presents announced that the Australian shows would be postponed, with the new dates set for December. At that time, existing tickets remained valid and refunds were offered to anyone unable to attend the rescheduled performances.
The latest announcement is different. Rather than moving the shows again, the entire Australian tour has now been cancelled.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the upcoming Hugh Cornwell Australian tour has been cancelled,” the promoter statement says.
“We sincerely apologise to all fans for letting you down and thank you for your understanding.”
The statement also removes the need for ticket holders to contact the promoter about their money. “No action is required on your end: full refunds will be processed automatically to your original payment method.”
The cancelled itinerary covered six Australian performances, beginning at Sydney’s Manning Bar on 4 December and concluding at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on 12 December.
The December dates had represented Cornwell’s planned return to Australia following the postponement announced in May. The original tour was also described by promoters as being affected by unforeseen circumstances, although no further detail was provided publicly.
Cornwell is best known as the original singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of The Stranglers, the British band whose catalogue became central to the development of punk and new wave in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
During his time with The Stranglers, Cornwell was involved in ten studio albums and wrote or co-wrote much of the material that established the band’s identity. Songs including “Golden Brown”, “No More Heroes”, “Peaches” and “Always The Sun” remain closely associated with his period in the group.
“Golden Brown”, from the 1981 album La Folie, has become one of The Stranglers’ most enduring songs, with its distinctive rhythm and unusual musical structure setting it apart from much of the band’s earlier work.
Cornwell left The Stranglers in 1990 and subsequently established a substantial solo career. His solo catalogue has continued to develop alongside his performances of songs from his years with The Stranglers.
His tenth solo studio album, Moments Of Madness, continued that work, while the 2024 double album All The Fun Of The Fair captured Cornwell in a live setting and brought together material from across his career.
That combination of solo material and The Stranglers catalogue has remained an important part of Cornwell’s live repertoire, giving Australian audiences the opportunity to hear songs spanning several decades of his career.
The Australian cancellation means those performances will now not take place in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Castlemaine or Melbourne as scheduled.
The cancelled Australian dates were:
Friday 4 December 2026, Sydney, Manning Bar
Saturday 5 December 2026, Brisbane, Crowbar
Sunday 6 December 2026, Adelaide, The Gov
Wednesday 9 December 2026, Perth, The Rosemount
Friday 11 December 2026, Castlemaine, Theatre Royal
Saturday 12 December 2026, Melbourne, Northcote Social Club
The cancellation follows the May postponement and means Cornwell’s planned 2026 Australian return will not proceed. At this stage, no new Australian dates have been announced.
