Midge Ure will revisit the music of his 1980s career with a new collection featuring fresh mixes, new studio recordings of two defining songs from his past and remixes from musicians who helped shape that era.
by Paul Cashmere
Midge Ure will release Chapters: The Best Of on 13 November, bringing together his 1980s catalogue in newly mixed form while recording two songs from that period again for the first time, Visage’s Fade To Grey and Phil Lynott’s Yellow Pearl.
The collection follows Ure’s recent studio album A Man Of Two Worlds and takes a broader look at a decade that established him as one of the central figures in British new wave and synth-pop.
The new recordings give Chapters: The Best Of a point of difference from a conventional career compilation. Rather than simply gathering the original recordings, Ure has revisited the material with 2026 stereo mixes and new studio performances of two songs closely associated with his 1980s work.
Fade To Grey has a particularly direct connection to Ure’s history. He was involved in the formation of Visage in 1978 with Rusty Egan and Steve Strange, with the original line-up also including musicians from Magazine and Ultravox. The band’s second single, Fade To Grey, became a Top 10 hit and helped define the sound and visual identity of the emerging New Romantic movement.
Ure’s new version gives him the opportunity to approach the song again more than four decades after its original release. The other newly recorded track, Yellow Pearl, connects the collection to his work with Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott.
The standard edition contains 15 tracks, while the deluxe collection expands the programme to 17 songs and adds two further recordings, When The Wind Blows and Hell To Heaven. The core tracklist moves through material including No Regrets, The Man Who Sold The World, After A Fashion with Mick Karn, The Gift, If I Was, Wasteland, Call Of The Wild, Answers To Nothing, Sister & Brother with Kate Bush, Dear God and Remembrance Day.
The expanded editions also place Ure’s music in the hands of several producers and musicians with their own connections to his musical world. Ten new remixes have been commissioned for the three-CD deluxe release.
Among them are a Chris Payne remix of Fade To Grey, a Richard Barbieri remix of After A Fashion, a Craig Armstrong reworking of That Certain Smile and a Steve Jansen remix of Sister And Brother. Wolfgang Flür of Kraftwerk contributes to the remix of Dear God with Duggal, while Blank & Jones revisit If I Was.
The second disc also includes a new 2026 remix of The Man Who Sold The World, a Ty Unwin reconstruction of Call Of The Wild, Danny Mitchell’s remix of Wasteland and a new rework of Answers To Nothing.
The connections are significant because Ure’s 1980s career crossed several strands of British music. After moving from Glasgow to London in 1977, he joined Glenn Matlock’s Rich Kids before forming Visage with Egan. His subsequent work with Ultravox established another major chapter, while collaborations with artists including Lynott, Karn and Bush expanded the range of musicians represented in his catalogue.
Chapters: The Best Of also includes a third disc of instrumental versions of the 17-song programme, giving the deluxe set another way into the arrangements beyond the vocal performances.
A Super Deluxe Edition will add a Blu-ray featuring an Atmos mix of the compilation, along with a hand-pressed splatter-vinyl edition of the two-LP set.
Chapters: The Best Of will be released by Chrysalis Records on 13 November 2026 on two-LP black vinyl and standard one-CD, with deluxe three-CD and Super Deluxe formats also available.
The collection ultimately links several stages of Ure’s 1980s career, but its most revealing element is the decision to make new studio recordings of Fade To Grey and Yellow Pearl, allowing two songs from that era to be heard again through Ure’s 2026 perspective.
