Tinpan Orange Source Great Gatsby Character For New Song ‘Rich Man’

The new Tinpan Orange song ‘Rich Man’ is based on The Great Gatsby character Tom Buchanan.

“Rich Man was co-written by Jesse, Harry and myself one hot afternoon in Ubud, Bali,” Tinpan Orange’s Emily Lubitz said. “We all sat around holding a guitar each, strumming and humming as ideas came to us. We had never written so collaboratively before and it was a bit nerve wracking because often your first ideas are a little cliche and so we had to have a lot of trust. The bulk of the song was written in an hour. Lyrically, this song is fiction, sort of based on a woman being with a Tom Buchanan kind of character from The Great Gatsby. It’s a cautionary tale I suppose. When we got to the studio, this song seemed to play itself. We performed it live and captured the moodiness and darkness of the song without any over thinking. Jesse Lubitz added, ”Rich Man is a warning – all that glitters… It was the first track that we wrote when we started writing for this album and Harry came up with the refrain. When I first heard the final mix I had the feeling that it could have been used as a Bond theme if David Lynch was directing…

‘Rich Man’ previews Tinpan Orange’s upcoming album, ‘Love is a Dog’ due February 12, 2016.
