Robert Plant and Saving Grace have released the official video for “Two Coats”, giving a wider audience access to a recording that has been part of the group’s live repertoire since its formation in 2019. The song is taken from Saving Grace: All That Glitters…, a four-track EP that will be released digitally on October 9 through Nonesuch Records after first being issued as a limited vinyl release for Record Store Day in April.
The EP documents another stage in Plant’s continuing work with Saving Grace, the acoustic ensemble formed around his interest in folk, Americana, blues, gospel and country music. The four recordings draw on traditional material and songs by established roots writers, reflecting the repertoire that Plant and the band have developed together on stage.
“Two Coats” is a traditional song associated with Ralph Stanley, and Plant has been performing it with Saving Grace for several years. In an interview, Plant explained that the group had been revisiting songs they would ordinarily perform live and decided to commit some of them to recording.
“We’ve had these songs that we normally might play on stage that we’ve decided to record. It’s a great Ralph Stanley song called ‘Two Coats’,” Plant said.
The EP also includes the traditional “The Blackest Crow”, Gillian Welch’s “Orphan Girl” and Bert Jansch’s “Poison”. Plant described Jansch’s song as another example of the material the group has been reshaping through its own musical perspective.
“Bert Jansch wrote a song called ‘Poison’ and we’ve sent that into the very late ’80s, sort of this mortal coil gets happy, happy go lucky, but not too American-y,” Plant said.
Saving Grace: All That Glitters… was initially released on vinyl on April 18, 2026, as part of Record Store Day. The physical edition was limited to 3,500 copies. The digital edition now makes the recordings available more broadly for purchase and streaming.
The EP’s final tracklisting also reflects a change from the project as originally announced. “She Cried”, written by Ted Daryll and Greg Richards, was initially listed for the release before being replaced by “Two Coats”.
The recordings originated from sessions Plant had been considering for a future Saving Grace album. Speaking to Record Collector for its April 2026 issue, Plant said the four tracks had been intended for the next record before he decided to present them separately.
“To be honest, the four tracks I’ve given to the project were part of the next record,” Plant said. “I thought, wait a minute, I really want to expand and show where I’ve ended up now at last.”
That comment provides an indication that the EP sits within a larger body of work rather than representing an isolated recording project. Plant has also described the material as a contribution intended to encourage listeners to engage with music and the wider culture surrounding it.
Saving Grace began in 2019 around Plant’s home on the Welsh borderlands. The ensemble brings together vocalist Suzi Dian, drummer Oli Jefferson, guitarist Tony Kelsey, banjo and string player Matt Worley, and cellist Barney Morse-Brown. The musicians initially developed the material informally before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted plans for touring.
Once live performance became possible again, Plant and Saving Grace returned to small venues and continued developing their repertoire. Their first studio album, Saving Grace, credited to Robert Plant with Suzi Dian, was released by Nonesuch Records in September 2025. The album was recorded between 2019 and early 2025 in locations including the Cotswolds and Welsh Borders.
The group’s work also places Plant in a different musical setting from the rock catalogue that established his international reputation. Rather than revisiting that repertoire, Saving Grace has provided a framework for Plant to explore the traditions and songwriters that have influenced his musical interests.
The release of “Two Coats” comes as Plant and Saving Grace prepare for another significant period of activity in the United States. Plant is scheduled to receive the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on September 16, followed by the Up the Sharp End US Tour with Saving Grace and Suzi Dian from September 18 through October 15. Rosie Flores is scheduled as special guest throughout the tour.
