Paul McCartney Says Oasis Should Reform

by Paul Cashmere on May 14, 2015

Paul McCartney is urging the Gallagher brothers to reform Oasis even though he never reformed his band that they idolised, The Beatles.

In a Q&A with fans McCartney was asked what advise he would have for Noel and Liam Gallagher.

He replied, “I don’t know if they will ever make up. It would be good because I think everyone likes brothers to like each other – and make up. It’s a pity because they are very good together. Like many brothers, they are crazy. But it would be nice if they got together. My advice to them? Just get together and make some good music! But they have got to want to do it. I think a lot of people would like them to do that. They are pretty cool guys!”

After The Beatles broke-up in 1970 they never reformed. Three of the four would continue to record on individual songs for each other’s solo projects and Ringo even had all Beatles contribute to his solo albums ‘Ringo’ and ‘Goodnight Vienna’ but the four Beatles would never again return to the studio together or perform live.

Oasis split in August, 2009. Since then Noel has formed High Flying Birds and Liam continues to tour and record with his band Beady Eye. Beady Eye is basically Oasis without Noel.

Both High Flying Birds and Beady Eye perform Oasis songs live. All four Beatles also performed Beatles songs at their solo shows. However Oasis can only Noel and Liam in the same room at the same time and The Beatles could only have been John, Paul George and Ringo.

The McCartney advise to Noel and Liam suggests that Sir Paul has regrets that he and John Lennon never patched up their differences to the point of a Beatles reunion.

A Lennon and McCartney reunion did come close once. By the mid 70s, they had resolved their personal differences and Paul and John did begin to socialize. In 1976, Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels offered the grand sum of $3000 for The Beatles to reform on his show. Paul and Linda McCartney were visiting John and Yoko Lennon at John’s home in New York that evening and were watching the show.

In 1980, John said in an interview with David Sheff, “Paul and I were together watching that show. He was visiting us at our place in the Dakota. We were watching it and almost went down to the studio, just as a gag. We nearly got into a cab, but we were actually too tired…

“He and Linda walked in and he and I were just sitting there watching the show, and we went, Ha-ha, wouldn’t it be funny if we went down, but we didn’t”.

The following day the McCartneys once again visited the Lennons. The date was 25 April, 1975. It was the last time Paul would see John alive.
