Little Birdy are back on stage celebrating 20 years of Big Big Love but according to Katy Steele, this reunion is about much more than nostalgia.
In this Noise11 Q&A, Paul Cashmere speaks with Katy Steele about performing Big Big Love in full for the first time, the album’s debut vinyl pressing (which recently hit No.2 on the Australian Vinyl Albums Chart), and why the band chose to release it independently.
Katy reflects on writing the songs as a teenager, admitting she was still discovering herself as a songwriter when Big Big Love was created. She discusses the return of original members Simon Leach and Scott O’Donoghue, the physical challenge of playing the album start to finish plus a second set, and why Little Birdy’s eclectic sound may have kept them from arena status.
The conversation also looks ahead. With Hollywood turning 20 next year, could another anniversary tour follow? More importantly, Katy confirms Little Birdy are already working on new material and are determined not to become a nostalgia act.
She also talks about balancing her solo career following 2023’s Big Star, managing the realities of today’s independent music industry, memories of touring Australia with R.E.M. in 2005, and why the band’s name came from a Ween album.
Plus: life on the road with young kids at home and why Split Enz’s Six Months In A Leaky Boat has become a highlight of the current tour.
