Actresses Penelope Keith and Angela Lansbury will now be known as Dame Penelope Keith and Dame Angela Lansbury. The two veteran actors were given the title by Queen Elizabeth II in her New Year’s Honours list.

73-year old Dame Penelope Keith became famous worldwide for her starring role in the British comedy To The Manor Born. She played Audrey Forbes-Hamilton in the TV series. Prior to that she played Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life.

Dame Penelope had previously been honoured by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1990 and the Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2007.

Her new title is Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE), given for her services to the Arts and to Charity.

The legendary Dame Angela Lansbury is one of the 20th centuries greatest actresses. She made her first movie ‘Gaslight’ in 1944 and the following year had a major role in ‘National Velvet’ alongside Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor. In 1971, Dame Angela had the starring role of Miss Eglantine Price in the Disney movie ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’. Her best-known role was as Jessica Fletcher for 286 episodes in ‘Murder, She Wrote’ from 1984-1996. In 2013, at age 88, she played Daisy Werthan in the Australian stage production of Driving Miss Daisy.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was established by King George V in 1917. Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is the second highest class of the division.
