Craig Gill, drummer for 90s Manchester band Inspiral Carpets, has died at the age of 44.

Inspiral Carpets were one of Manchester’s most respected bands around the time of Joy Division, New Order and happy Mondays.

After the band broke up in 1995 Gill ran a record stall at Manchester’s indoor market. He was also a DJ in a local Manchester Club.

Inspiral Carpets reformed in 2003. Gill remained the band’s drummer until this death this week.

In a statement Inspiral Carpets posted:

‘It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our drummer and close friend Craig Gill,’ the statement from bandmates Graham Lambert, Clint Boon, Stephen Holt and Martyn Walsh read.

‘We are all absolutely devastated by the news. Craig was our brother.

‘We were honoured to work alongside him for the last 30 years,’ the band went on.
‘To say we’ll miss him is an understatement.

‘He was the beating heart of the Inspirals in more ways than one.’

Liam Gallagher was one of the first to pay his respects.

Gill leaves behind wife, Rose and their children, Georgia, Orla and Levon.
