Silverchair Frogstomp Is A Top 20 Hit Again

20 years after its debut Silverchair’s debut album ‘Frogstromp’ is back in the Australian Top 20.

‘Frogstomp’ re-entered the ARIA album chart this week at no 19 with 1164 sales.

‘Frogstromp’ has been reissued as an expanded deluxe set to mark 20 years since the then three Newcastle teenagers Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou amazed the world with an album that stood alongside the best of grunge out of Seattle.

Silverchair took the ‘silver’ part of their name from a Nirvana song ‘Sliver’ and ‘chair’ was inspired by You Am I’s ‘Berlin Chair’.

Johns, Gillies and Joannou were 14 years old when they recorded ‘Frogstomp’. They are all in their mid 30s now.

‘Frogstomp’ was a number one album in Australia in June 1995. It also reached no 9 on the Billboard album chart and sold over 2 million copies in America.

Silverchair went on to release four more albums ‘Freak Show’ (1997), ‘Neon Ballroom’ (1999), ‘Diorama’ (2002) and ‘Young Modern’ (2007).

Lead singer Daniel Johns released a collaboration titled ‘The Dissociatives’ with Paul Mac in 2004. The album reached no 4 in Australia.

Johns has just released his debut solo record the ‘Aerial Love’ EP. The EP is at no 95 this week on the ARIA Singles chart.

Ben Gillies formed Tambalane with Wes Carr. That produced one album in 2005. Tambalane disbanded shortly after when Carr entered Australian Idol and won the sixth season. Ben is married to Jackie Gillies. The couple relocated to Melbourne so that Jackie could compete star in The Real Housewives of Melbourne. (Apparently the Real Housewives of Newcastle was never going to happen).
