Concert goers at the Family Stone show in Red Bank, NJ received a special surprise on Sunday when Sly Stone took the stage for a rare appearance with the band.

The occasion was the Rock & Funk Fest at the Count Basie Theatre with the Family Stone headlining and Rick Derringer, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels and Badfinger Featuring Joey Holland in support. Stone took the stage with the band to play and sing on If You Want Me to Stay.

The following is fan shot footage which, unfortunately, has distorted sound.

Currently in the band are original members Cynthia Robinson (trumpet), Jerry Martini (saxophone) and Greg Errico (drums). Joining them was Sly’s daughter, Sylvette Phunne (vocals, keyboards).

Errico told the Asbury Park Press “I never thought it could happen but there were a couple of places recently I had the feeling it could happen. We played Glastonbury (Festival) in the U.K. and it didn’t happen there … but he stayed in contact with us. It was great to see him with a great big smile on his face. He was really in the moment and he was grooving.”
