The Snuts have released their fourth studio album, Joy In Short Moments, a record shaped by frontman Jack Cochrane’s return to his West Lothian roots and the life-changing experience of becoming a father. Released through the band’s own Happy Artist Records in partnership with Virgin Music Group, the album reflects a period of personal reassessment after years spent touring and making records on the road.
For Jack Cochrane, coming home brought a different perspective on life and the demands of a career that had kept him constantly moving. Becoming a father prompted questions about identity, relationships and the direction he wanted his life to take, providing the central inspiration for Joy In Short Moments.
The album explores the contrast between the momentum of touring and the quieter responsibilities of family life. Rather than continuing to build around the scale of the band’s increasingly successful live performances, Cochrane turned his attention towards the personal experiences that had been pushed aside during years on the road.
“Being on the road for years, you get very good at not checking in, with yourself or anyone else,” Cochrane said. “Coming home and becoming a dad made me look at that properly. These conversations are the ones I wish I’d heard earlier, and if one person listens and picks up the phone to a mate, that’s worth doing.”
The change in circumstances also influenced how the album was made. Cochrane established a recording studio at home and worked with producer Scotty Anderson, giving The Snuts greater control over the recording process and the finished production.
The resulting album reconnects with the direct guitar-driven approach that helped establish the band’s following while introducing a more reflective perspective. Its songs draw from personal experience without abandoning the melodic instincts and communal energy that have become central to The Snuts’ identity.
Several tracks were introduced ahead of the album. ‘Defibrillator’ was released in June alongside the album announcement, followed by ‘In Motion’ in July. The latter became a standout during the band’s sold-out European tour. ‘PTS’ has continued the album campaign, while the title track is accompanied by a new video.
Joy In Short Moments also represents another chapter in the band’s independent business journey. Happy Artist Records was established after The Snuts departed Parlophone following their third album.
Their 2024 release Millennials was self-produced and independently released, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart. It completed an impressive sequence of three consecutive UK Top 3 albums. Their debut, W.L., reached number one in 2021, followed by Burn The Empire at number three in 2022 and Millennials at number two in 2024.
The band’s latest album maintains that independent approach, with Virgin Music Group providing the partnership for its release.
The themes behind Joy In Short Moments have also extended into a new podcast series, Finding Joy In Short Moments.
As an ambassador for mental health charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), Cochrane has started hosting conversations with fellow musicians about mental health, friendship and the importance of checking in with people around you.
The series began on 2 October with former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson as its first guest. Further episodes are expected, with the podcast providing a platform for conversations that Cochrane believes are important but often overlooked in the music industry.
The project connects directly with his own experience of spending years on tour, where the demands of performing and travelling can make maintaining personal relationships more difficult.
While Joy In Short Moments looks inward, The Snuts are continuing to build their reputation as one of Scotland’s most successful contemporary guitar bands.
The group will headline Glasgow’s SEC on Saturday 17 July 2027 for a special 8,000-capacity event. The show will also feature Overpass, Cherryholt and Siobhàn Winifred, bringing together established performers and emerging Scottish talent.
The Glasgow performance follows The Snuts’ first Scottish arena headline show at the OVO Hydro and an international touring history that includes sold-out headline runs across Japan, Australia, Europe and North America.
Their catalogue has produced the kind of guitar-driven songs that translate naturally into large venues, but Joy In Short Moments offers a different perspective on the people behind those performances.
For Cochrane, the return to West Lothian, fatherhood and the decision to record at home have provided an opportunity to reconsider the balance between career ambition and personal life.
The fourth album is therefore more than another release in a successful run of records. It documents a period of change for a band that has continued to grow commercially while its frontman has begun asking different questions about what success means.
