The Beatles Premiere Last Song Ever ‘Now and Then’

The final Beatles song ‘Now and Then’ really is a work of art. The audio technology developed by Peter Jackson for the ‘Get Back’ project is what had made this recording possible today. The technology to separate John’s voice from his original demo cassette did not exist even five years ago.

I would have loved Giles Martin to have cleaned up the other two new tracks on Anthology ‘Free as a Bird’ and ‘Real Love’ with the Peter Jackson technology but that maybe for the future. And there is a stack of music in ‘Get Back’ that was never released but heard in the documentary like the song ‘Commonwealth’. I doubt ‘Now and Then’ is the last Beatles song.

Check out ‘Now and Then’.

Giles Martin has used all the Beatles tricks on this recording. There’s the orchestra with the strings at 1.55 on beyond, Ringo’s signature drum beat at 1:09, the George Harrison sounding (played by Paul McCartney) at 2.30, Paul’s Hoffner bass sound and the choral backing vocals around 3.00. Ringo is also quite audible on backing vocals around 1.20 and 2.20. We know George’s guitar work from the 1994 Anthology sessions is used on the track but I’m unsure which bits are him and which are Paul.

Some of those vocal effects are from the ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and ‘Because’ recordings by The Beatles.

A music video for the song by Peter Jackson will be released tomorrow. Jackson said, “When Apple asked me to make the music video, I was very reluctant – I thought my next few months would be a hell of a lot more fun if that tricky task was somebody else’s problem, and I could be like any other Beatles fan, enjoying the night – before-Christmas anticipation as the release of a new Beatles song and music video approached – in 1995, l loved the childlike excitement I felt as the release of ‘Free As A Bird’ was inching closer.
“I could have that experience once again – all I had to do was say no to The Beatles…”

The new editions of the Red and Blue albums ‘1962-1966’ and ‘1967-1970’ will be released on 10 November 2023.
