White Zombie’s final release turned Astro-Creep: 2000 material into an industrial remix project in 1996

White Zombie’s Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds marks its 30th anniversary in August 2026, three decades after the remix album became the final release issued under the band’s name. Released through Geffen Records in 1996, the 11-track collection reworked material associated primarily with Astro-Creep: 2000 and added a cover of KC and the Sunshine Band’s “I’m Your Boogie Man”. The album reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 and No. 49 in Australia.
Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds occupies an unusual position in White Zombie’s catalogue. It followed the band’s most commercially successful studio album, Astro-Creep: 2000, but rather than presenting another collection of original songs, it used remixing to extend the industrial and electronic elements that had become increasingly prominent in the band’s music.
The project brought together a broad group of remixers, including Charlie Clouser, John Fryer, The Dust Brothers, Mike “Hitman” Wilson, P.M. Dawn and The Damage Twins. The result shifted familiar White Zombie compositions away from their original album arrangements and towards club-oriented, programmed and electronically manipulated interpretations.
Rob Zombie’s official website identifies Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds as White Zombie’s first remix album and the last album created under the White Zombie name. It also notes that most of the material came from the band’s previous recordings, predominantly Astro-Creep: 2000, with “I’m Your Boogie Man” included as a cover.
The timing of Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds is significant because White Zombie had reached a new level of commercial visibility with Astro-Creep: 2000.
Released in 1995, Astro-Creep: 2000 moved the band further into industrial metal, combining heavy guitar riffs with programmed elements, samples and Rob Zombie’s horror-inspired lyrical and visual identity. The album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, giving White Zombie its highest chart position.
Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds effectively dissected that sound. “More Human than Human”, “Super-Charger Heaven”, “Electric Head Pt. 1” and “Electric Head Pt. 2” were among the songs given new treatments, while P.M. Dawn’s remix of “Blood, Milk and Sky” provided one of the collection’s most unexpected combinations.
The album was produced by Terry Date, who had also worked on Astro-Creep: 2000, with Stephen Marcussen handling mastering. White Zombie’s lineup at the time consisted of Rob Zombie on vocals, Sean Yseult on bass, Jay Yuenger on guitar and John Tempesta on drums. Yseult and Rob Zombie also contributed to the album’s visual direction, with Yseult credited for art direction and Zombie credited for illustrations and art direction.
White Zombie had begun in New York in 1985, initially operating within the city’s noise rock underground before developing the heavier sound that would define their later career.
The transition accelerated through the late 1980s and early 1990s, leading to the Geffen Records deal and the release of La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One in 1992. That album established songs including “Thunder Kiss ’65” and “Black Sunshine” and pushed the band into mainstream rock audiences.
Astro-Creep: 2000 consolidated that success three years later. “More Human than Human” became one of White Zombie’s signature songs, while the album’s heavier industrial approach helped distinguish the band from the alternative and groove-metal acts surrounding them.
By 1996, however, the group was nearing the end of its career. White Zombie played its final live dates that year, including a North American tour with Pantera. Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds followed as the band’s last album release. White Zombie would officially disband in September 1998.
Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds performed considerably better commercially than might be expected from a remix collection released at the end of a band’s active recording period.
It peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard 200, while also reaching No. 49 on the Australian Albums chart, No. 29 in New Zealand and No. 54 in Sweden.
The album also became notable for its artwork. The original cover featured model Merci Montello nude, while a clean edition distributed through major US retail chains used an alternative image with Montello wearing a blue bikini. Rob Zombie’s official site confirms that the alternative cover was created following objections from retailers including Walmart.
Thirty years later, Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds remains a document of White Zombie at the point where their metal, industrial and remix culture intersected. It also stands as the closing chapter of the band’s recorded catalogue, preceding Rob Zombie’s move into his solo career and the eventual end of White Zombie as a working band.
The album’s legacy is therefore tied not only to its remixes, but to the moment it represents: White Zombie had reached the commercial height of its career, completed its final studio album, and then used a remix project to close out the recording chapter under its original name.
